The Zone Diet is one of the five most widely discussed diet foods currently approved. Developed by Barry Sears, a former researcher at MIT, it is based on maintaining insulin levels by striking a balance between carbohydrates and proteins in each diet.
Sears suggests that the main cause of obesity is insulin imbalance in the body. He emphasizes that diets currently recommended by many medical institutions are high in carbohydrates and low fats - a combination of antagonists that contributes to the production of excess insulin, and causes obesity.
The Zone Diet is based on the idea of achieving a state of life in which insulin and eicosanoids, two hormones, are stored in carefully controlled environments. By controlling the insulin and eicosanoids balance, you increase fat loss, and reduce your risk of heart disease and diabetes, reduce inflammation and increase blood flow, and increase your physical and mental capacity.
Zone Diet
The Zone diet plan is designed to balance your protein and carbohydrate intake from 1 protein to 4 parts carbohydrate. Advise a balanced diet of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats to control insulin. Specifies the maximum amount of low-fat protein at a single meal in 3-4 ounces, which is almost exactly the recommendations of the USDA and FDA. Most of the carbohydrates in the Zone diet come from vegetables and fruits, which have a limited amount of bread, rice, potatoes, and whole grains. High-fat diets should come from monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, safflower oil, and other ‘healthy heart fat’.
Although this sounds as good as the Atkins diet (to prevent carbohydrates), the difference is very clear. Atkins recommends a high-protein diet without looking at fats, to provoke ketosis, a potentially dangerous health condition. A high-carbohydrate diet promotes increased carbohydrate levels and stimulates insulin production, which keeps Sears afloat, increasing obesity. Instead, the Zone Diet recommends achieving a balanced balance of nutrients with moderate amounts of protein, carbohydrates, and fats all play a role.
Another part of the Zone diet that should be noted is dietary support with fish oil. Fish oil, especially medicinal fish oil, provides omega 3 fatty acids which are an essential component of healthy cells. Post-research studies over the past five years have confirmed the importance of fish and omega 3 fatty acids in the diet.
Food samples from The Zone's food program may include:
1 3 oz portion of grilled salmon
Spinach salad with apples and walnuts dressed in walnut oil and lemon juice
1/2 cup red rice
1 glass of fruit or vegetable juice
The diet plan recommended by The Zone diet includes small portions of low-fat protein, saturated fats and vegetables, and fiber-rich fruits. It also recommends eating a certain protein with each meal or snack, and at least 3 meals and 2 snacks daily.
Who should use the Zone Diet?
As always, if you are under medical supervision for any chronic illness, you should consult them before starting any diet plan that drastically changes your eating habits. There are significant differences between the Zone Diet and those recommended for diabetics and heart patients, for example. All in all, the recommended portion of food and the balance between you are accompanied by a healthy diet and is maintained for life.
