Poem:
Stopping By Woods On A Snowy Evening.
Whose woods these are, I think I know.
His house is in the village, though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.
My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.
He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound’s the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.
The woods are lovely, dark and deep,
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

THEME:
On a dark wintry evening, the poet was riding past the woods when he suddenly stopped his carriage at a deserted spot between the woods and the frozen lake. The poet presents the deep realities of life by undertaking a journey through snow-filled wood a horse-drawn carriage. This poem tells about the two opposite pulls that tug the human mind throughout its existence from birth to death. One is his desire for enjoyment, and the other is his sense of duty.
The poet knew that the woods owner would not venture out of his warm and cozy home in the village on such a cold evening to keep a watch on his woods. So, he could watch the lovely, dark, and deep woods filling up with snow undisturbed; The place was so silent that he could hear the light wind blowing and the fall of feather-light snow. His horse broke the deep silence around the by shaking its harness bells to ask its master the reason for the sudden halt in an uninhabited place. The poet was unable to enjoy the beauty around him in a long leisurely way as he had a long way to travel and keep the promise he
Made. Yet, at the core of his heart, his sense of duty pricks him to carry his journey as he has a " promise to keep. " Finally, his social urges win over his personal pleasure,. The determined poet repeats his vows twice, upholding his sense of responsibility as a human being, leaving the enticing beauty behind the moving wheels of his departing carriage and the galloping horse hoofs.
