When talking about hereditary hair loss, most people think of the most common form of hair loss: male pattern baldness. This is a type of hair loss that is passed on to offspring from their mothers. Usually, the recipients of this type of hair loss are men, but sometimes genetics can lead to hair loss in women. While genetic hair loss in men is defined as hair loss or baldness, genetic hair loss in women is a little different. In most cases, women will not experience spot-on hair loss, but will lighten their entire head. Sometimes this thinning can be quite severe and a woman must wear a wig to cover her thinning hair. Although hair loss in women almost never leads to complete baldness, it can be severe enough to reveal the scalp. For women facing this type of hair loss, there are several hair loss treatments that can be explored. These include shampoos, conditioners and topical treatments, such as Rogaine for Women, that help stimulate hair growth and prevent hair loss; vitamin supplements; and stimulating therapies such as massage and infrared therapy. The most effective of these hair loss treatments are topical treatments. Although they are quite expensive, they give the best results. Hair loss due to chemical process No matter how strong and healthy your hair is today, you can still experience severe hair loss after undergoing a harsh chemical process like perming or dyeing. While almost all chemical hair loss is caused by operator error, the risk of it occurring is multiplied by the chemical services you perform on your hair at home. I have witnessed more than one case of female hair loss from clients who bleached their hair at home, dyed it, and then went to the salon to have it bleached. Unaware of this past, the stylist used harsh chemicals and the process resulted in hair loss. Since most of these cases do not lead to complete hair loss, hair loss treatment options include protein treatments and other conditioning treatments to strengthen the remaining hair; a good haircut will remove most damage; and a gentle hair care routine will minimize hair loss. You should also limit the use of heat styling tools and other chemical procedures until your hair is fully grown. Hair loss due to stress Instances of extreme stress can cause a few hair loss at a time. Women who live in stressful conditions may experience female pattern hair loss, which manifests as a gradual thinning on the head or in areas known as alopecia areata. Alopecia areata means "patchy or regional hair loss" and can lead to bald patches on one or more spots on the scalp. Although this type of hair loss is alarming, it is not permanent. Once the stress is removed, most people with this type of hair loss will regrow all of their lost hair. In most cases, treatment for stress-related hair loss is minimal. After ruling out other causes of hair loss, your doctor will likely recommend dietary changes or ideas to help you relieve stress. Remember that your hair can take months to regrow, even after the stressors have been removed. Hair loss due to illness Any kind of prolonged illness or surgery can lead to hair loss. Medicines for certain conditions can also make your hair brittle and break or fall out altogether. The most recognizable type of hair loss is chemotherapy-related hair loss. In most cases, hair loss is complete and affects all areas of the body. While there isn't much that can be done to stop this type of hair loss or promote growth during illness, surgery, or chemotherapy, this type of hair loss in women is only temporary. In most cases, the hair recovers completely once the disease is gone. You can promote hair growth after illness by trimming it regularly and using hair growth shampoos and conditioners. Vitamin supplements may also be beneficial. As you may have already guessed, hair loss in women is more common than you think. And many people may experience hair loss as a natural phenomenon that comes with age. Many of these women are not looking for the necessary hair loss treatments that can help them keep the rest of their hair and regrow new hair. So if you're losing your hair, don't think it's just because you're getting older. You can do something to prevent the hair on your head from clogging the drain.
