WHAT ARE THE SECRETS BEHIND 'LUCIFER'S VICTORY?
The Malayalam movie industry is big, big enough to hold varieties of content. Moreover, it has a brilliant audience who will clap for the best, irrespective of the film crew's profile, the director's success, and the stardom of the actors- this is the ‘new generation’ of Kerala’s film audience.
Like any other film industry in India, molly wood has also undergone series of changes with time. From the romantic and sentimental mood, films saw a rise in voracity towards action-comedy films in the twentieth century. But in the last few years, the success stories of the film adhered to the ‘new generation’ audience, as I told you earlier. It was a bonus that we got along with two invaluable actors of the country, Mammoth and Mohanlal.
The arrival of Lucifer
In such an era, accurately March 2019, a big-budget movie starring the complete actor Mohanlal arrived on the silver screen; Lucifer. We are hearing a film in this name for the second time, after the 2015 web series ‘Lucifer.’ The movie had high expectations. As expected, to date, it is the only movie in the film industry to dream of a 2 billion victory.
The directorial debut of young sensation Prithviraj Sukumaran was one of the film’s main ‘hype.’ The ‘high expectations’ created for film always work as a reason for the film's victory. Still, it was naturally born, in the case of this film. Film’s Great people are less expected to make a mistake.
Another reason was the rich star cast of the film. Lady superstar Manju Warrier and Bollywood sensation Vivek Obray with Malayalis ‘Valetta was enough to make a storm in Kerala. Each important role in the movie was handled by prominent people, both young sensations and veteran actors.
But how was the movie?
Now let me come to the real question: does this film deserve a 200 crore victory? Please don’t take me as a fool who compares an artistic film with a commercial to find moral values. I am simply asking whether the movie possesses the elements that other Indian movies of 200 crores club have.
The basic qualifications for a new film to succeed tremendously in the market can be simplified and brought under four heads: fresh concept, thrilling story, expensive looks, or hyperactive heroes. We can have an overview of whether ‘lucifer’ possesses these features.
The film's concept brought forward by Murali Gopi obviously had freshness in its look, but we can’t say this is the very first political drama we have seen. So it alone can’t be the reason for the victory. There comes the thrill of the story and its narration. Sure, the story’s narrator had high cinematographic qualities; but the twist of the story was the cliché one, carried forward from a 1970's don movie.
The movie looked expensive with a huge star cast and bomb blast scenes, but there again, what disappoints is that nothing new was brought to the screen. The last and final factor I told you about was the heroic charisma of superstars; in the absence of all the other factors, this comes to save our heroes. This factor was highly celebrated in the movie, though the star's fight scenes and screen presence were ‘unusually’ reduced in the film.
The inevitable ‘lalettan’ effect
Mohanlal, alias ‘Lalettan,’ is one of the few actors in India who truly deserve the title of superstar. For the last three decades, he was the most successful in building and enhancing a consistent victory. For the same reason, the people of Kerala have adopted him as their own child, brother, lover, and uncle.
The naughtiness inborn with boldness and the readiness to take different faces had made him the loveliest actor in the country. Most people have given him second place in their home, right after lord Sree Krishna! These explanations are more than enough to tell why he is a hero for all.
To conclude...
Lucifer is a Malayalam movie that obviously deserves 2 billion’s victory. Throwing away all the logical aspects of analysis, the basic thing a movie wants is that people should like it. It should satisfy them with experience. Lucifer and its crew were successful in bringing that. And what to tell more, when it was executed through the king of mass experience? Logically, decisions are valued for victory more than the content. That is purely proved here!
