When you hear the name Rishi Sunak, you might be tempted to think of the famous Indian spiritual philosopher, Rishi Surya, or of the Hindu Lord Surya (the Sun God). If so, you’re in good company – many people make the same mistake! In reality, Rishi Sunak is actually an MP who has only recently stepped into the national limelight with his new role as parliamentary private secretary to Theresa May, Britain’s Prime Minister. But how did this man go from the simple life of Chatham in Kent to rubbing shoulders with those at the top of British politics?

Born in London 

Rishi was born in London, the son of Indian immigrants. He attended Oxford University and returned to London as an investment banker. He served as an adviser to former British Prime Minister David Cameron before being elected MP for Richmond in 2010 and was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Ministry of Justice. In 2016 he became Minister of State for Employment at the Department for Work and Pensions. In September 2018 he was made minister without portfolio with responsibility for international trade - which will allow him to speak about Brexit on behalf of Theresa May’s government when she is not available.

Educated at Charterhouse School 

Rishi Sunak is a British Conservative politician and economist, who served as Member of Parliament for Richmond. He has been appointed Minister of State at the Department for International Development. He was educated at Charterhouse School, Cambridge University, and Harvard University. In his professional life he worked in venture capital, focusing on emerging markets such as India. In 2006 he co-founded Rutland Partners which focused on investing in small and medium-sized companies in India with an aim to help them grow internationally. 

In 2010 he became Vice President of private equity firm Bridgepoint Capital, after it acquired Rutland Partners. 

He returned to India with his family in 2013 when Bridgepoint was sold to Helion Ventures to join their team there as senior adviser.

Earned B.A. degree from Oxford University 

Rishi graduated from Oxford University with a degree in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics (PPE) and is currently pursuing his M.P.P. at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government as well as an MBA from Stanford Business School. His graduation thesis focused on the best way to get out of poverty by focusing on social change rather than charitable contributions or philanthropy.

Moved to Pennsylvania where he was elected as the youngest state representative in the United States 

After graduating, he attended law school at Georgetown University where he was an editor for the Supreme Court Law Review. Following law school, Mr. Sunak clerked for Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy and spent time working on Capitol Hill. He went on to serve as Associate Counsel to President George W. Bush and Deputy National Security Advisor in the White House before returning to Pennsylvania where he was elected as the youngest state representative in the United States.

Elected as Member of Parliament for Richmond (Yorks) 

In 2010, Rishi was elected as Member of Parliament for Richmond (Yorks) and in May 2015, he was appointed Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State at the Department for International Development. He is also a Fellow at the University College London's Institute of Global Health Innovation.
