Sony’s Ethereum scaling network

PlayStation maker Sony has launched its Ethereum scaling network, Soneium, aimed at bringing blockchain technology to the masses by augmenting areas like film, music, and gaming. Soneium officially went live this week, with a focus on integrating crypto seamlessly into consumer experiences. While Sony hasn’t confirmed direct plans to incorporate Soneium into its PlayStation ecosystem, the possibility raises exciting questions about the future of gaming and blockchain.

Sota Watanabe, Director of Sony Block Solutions Labs (BLS), highlighted the network's potential to onboard everyday users into the cryptosphere. However, PlayStation representatives haven’t shared specific plans for integrating blockchain into popular franchises like God of War or Gran Turismo. While the Soneium website lists gaming as a potential application, no Sony-made titles currently leverage the technology.

Several games, such as Derby Race and OverTrip, are being built on Soneium by independent developers, using NFTs and staking mechanics. These games are in early stages and not connected to Sony or its partner, Startale Labs. Soneium, as a permissionless network, allows third-party developers to create blockchain games, much like other platforms such as Solana.

Sony has explored blockchain integration previously, filing patents for using NFTs to track in-game assets and creating "super-fungible tokens," which bundle NFT items. These innovations indicate Sony’s interest in blockchain but don’t confirm any PlayStation-related initiatives yet.

A PlayStation game leveraging Soneium could revolutionize blockchain gaming. For now, crypto integration in console games remains experimental, as seen with titles like Off the Grid, which tracks user assets on the Avalanche blockchain but modifies its approach for PS5. Speculation continues around the inclusion of digital assets in Grand Theft Auto 6, though Rockstar Games has banned crypto-related elements in earlier titles to safeguard intellectual property.

Sony BLS recently blacklisted meme coins misusing PlayStation characters on Soneium, reinforcing its focus on proper blockchain use.
