What is the Place of Woman in Indian Society ?

" A man becomes aware that few have had a fair chance, they are inclined to say that no women have had a fair chance."

                                                 - Margaret Fuller

Introduction:

Men and women are the two necessary wheels of the cart of life. One cannot exist without the other. Men make society, but women make men. Women are more important for a nation. The progress and prosperity of a country truly depends on women. They are complementary to each other. About the great significance of women, remarks Napoleon :

Give us good women, we will have a great civilization,

Give us good mothers, we will have a great nation."

In India, society has always looked at women with respect.

Women in the past :

During the Vedic period, the Indian woman had high position. She moved freely in the society and took active part in all activities. The name of Mandala and Savitri are well known and cannot be forgotten easily.

Medieval Period :

In the medieval period her condition became more pitiable on account of purdah system, early marriage, blind faith, illiteracy, etc. She was put within the four walls of the house,  almost a prisoner or a slave.

Gradual Changes :

In modern times, the conditions are changing.  One feels unhappy on the birth of a female child. She is called a decree of one or two lac rupees on the parents. There is an urgent need to change this mind set.

Significance of Indian Women :

Despite all odds, women are playing a very  remarkable role in most of the fields of life. Now, they are not kept as domestic workers.  They have an important role in the development of the country. More and more girls are getting education today.

In the field of education, no difference is made between boys and the girls. Women are taking part in every field of life freely. There are so many women who have become MPs and MLA's viz. Mrs. Vijaya Luxmi Pandit was our High  commissioner in England for some time, Mrs Padmaja was the Governor of Bengal for a long time. Shrimati Sucheta Kripalani was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. Mrs Timur was the Chief Minister of Assam. Mrinalini Sarabhai and Shreyansi, etc. have been our cultural ambassadors.

Our late prime Minister Shrimati Indira Gandhi brought a complete recognition of modern Indian women on the world map.

Mrs. Sonia Gandhi, Miss Mayawati, are very well known names in politics.

The contributions of Sushmita Sen, Aishwarya RAI, Diana Hayden and Priyanka Chopra are well known.

In Hindi Film Industry, there are world-famous women, like Anushka Sharma, Karina Kapoor, Katrina Kaif, etc.

Kiran, an IPS Officer, is also well known around. Today women are doctors, nurses, teachers and lawyers. They are showing their proficiency in every field, including defense and police forces.

Hindu Marriage Act :

Now, Hindu law has been changed. Some important changes are made in Hindu Marriage Act also. Women are protected against domestic violence. They have equal right in the property of their parents. A new awakening is coming in the society, and women will certainly regain their lost honor and glory very soon. The signs of the change are visible everywhere.

Conclusion :

If we carefully mark the work being done by women in India today, we can predict that India will one day rise to be a leader of mankind. And women will play the most important role in making India a great nation.

Thank you for your time.
