Manish Malhotra's latest design for Air India's cabin crew uniforms gives sarees a contemporary twist.
On December 12, Manish Malhotra's cabin crew and pilot uniforms were unveiled by Air India. The male cabin crew members will be dressed in bandhgalas, while the female members will be dressed in modern ombre sarees. The well-known couturier created timeless black suits for the cockpit crew.
The first Airbus A350 operated by Air India will be the first to wear the new uniforms, which will be phased in over the coming months.
The female cabin crew uniform consists of an ombre saree that is ready to wear, paired with a blouse and blazer, and features intricate jharokha patterns and the Vista (the new Air India logo icon). Neo-classical, as we put it.
It is optional to pair the ready-to-wear sarees with casual pants. According to the airline's press release, the goal of the change is to give female cabin crew members more freedom to wear whatever style best suits them and to create a distinctive East meets West aesthetic.
The cabin crew and cockpit crew of Air India have new uniforms.
The senior female cabin crew will wear ombre sarees that range from aubergine to burgundy, paired with aubergine blazers. Bright red to purple sarees paired with red blazers will be worn by junior female cabin crew members.
The traditional black double-breasted suit worn by the cockpit crew, on the other hand, has a Vista-inspired print.
According to Manish Malhotra, his goal was to design uniforms that embodied a sleek, contemporary style while also capturing the spirit of India's many cultures and customs.
"I am honoured to have been selected to create the Air India uniforms. Being able to support the national flag-bearer and exhibit the grace and allure of Indian fashion is an honor. The designer stated, "My goal was to create uniforms that embody a modern and sophisticated look, while also capturing the essence of India's diverse culture and traditions."
"Air India's crew uniforms are some of the most famous in aviation history, and we have no doubt that Manish Malhotra's creative team will write an exciting new chapter in the airline's history." Campbell Wilson, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of Air India, said, "It perfectly captures the essence of our new identity, service principles, and our pursuit of setting new benchmarks in global aviation."
In addition, the designer has chosen shoes that complement the uniforms. The male cabin crew will wear casual black brogues, while the women will wear dual-toned (black and burgundy) block heels. For female cabin crew, the uniforms include sling bags and pearl earrings.
Additionally, Manish Malhotra created the uniforms for the engineers, security personnel, and ground crew of Air India.They haven't been revealed yet.
