Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez had one of the most famous on-off romances in Hollywood. The pop stars first met as young teenagers in 2009, after Bieber admitted that the “Good for You” singer was his celebrity crush. Under the guise of close friends, the pair went on to quietly date for several months before making their public debut as a couple at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in February 2011.
After two years together, they broke up for the first time — a cycle that would repeat for five more years, until their final split and Bieber's subsequent marriage to model Hailey Baldwin Bieber in 2018. Following their acrimonious fallout, Hailey claimed that she only started dating the Canadian singer after he called it quits with Selena, but new pictures from around the same time Hailey started dating Bieber prove otherwise. Hailey Bieber is finally addressing the years-long debate over her relationship with Justin Bieber and the alleged feud with his ex-Selena Gomez.
Speaking to Alexandra Cooper on the episode of her Call Her Daddy podcast, Hailey assured that despite fans' assumptions, she never dated the “Peaches” singer at the same time as Selena—nor did she “steal” him from her, but new pictures suggest she is lying.
Hailey and Bieber were first romantically linked in 2015 when he was on a break with Selena—whom he had dated on and off since 2011. The two got back together in 2018 after he split with Selena for the last time, and the two got married.
In the podcast, Hailey said that she “period, point-blank … was never in a relationship with him when he was with anybody.” Hailey added that it's “not her character to mess with someone's relationship.”
The model broke down the timeline of her relationship with the singer, explaining that they rekindled their romance in 2018 after Bieber had closed a chapter with Selena. Fans may recall that month prior to Bieber proposing to Hailey, he and Selena, who had just undergone a kidney transplant, briefly got back together. But Hailey said she would have never started things again with Bieber had she not been sure that his romance with Selena was over.
But around the same time, the model started seeing Bieber, and photos of him and Selena were snapped in public, sparking reactions that Bieber was seeing both women at the time.
“I think it was the best thing that could have happened for him to move on and be engaged and get married and move on with his life in that way,” Hailey said. “I know what was going on when we got back together, and I know what had to happen for that to come back together in a healthy way.”
Hailey praised her husband's “healthy, mature decision” to completely move on from Selena, calling it “respectful to” her. But from these pictures, it seems that wasn't the case.
"I would never want to get into a relationship with someone and be engaged to them and be getting married to them and think in the back of my mind, 'I wonder if that was really closed for you,'” she added. “I know for a fact that the reason we were able to get back together was because it was very much completely closed.”
Hailey and Bieber married in an intimate ceremony in September 2018 before throwing a lavish wedding one year later in South Carolina. In the four years since, she has never addressed the online drama regarding her relationship, nor has she bashed Selena in any way. In the podcast, she said she and her husband are “so far moved on from any type of drama" with the “Lose You to Love Me” singer, and she doesn't “want to stir anything up or bring anything up.”
While Bieber has navigated the first few years of marriage, he and Selena have largely kept quiet about each other in recent years. In May 2022, the singer spoke out about her own love life while hosting Saturday Night Live.
Selena joked about looking for love with “anyone” during her opening monologue on the show. “One reason I've been very happy to host is because I'm single," she said, continuing, “and I've heard SNL is a great place to find romance."
So, clearly, the Selena, Hailey, and Bieber love triangle is not over until it is over.
