Aims and objectives of the N.C.C
Our country India was liberated from the century-long British rule after long years of freedom movement waged by our people under the powerful leadership of Mahatma Gandhi. It became a free nation on 15th August 1947. At the time of partition and also at the time of Chinese aggression, our country was forced to be in wars with our neighboring countries. Lots of our soldiers were killed. There was a great threat to our hard-won independence. The government felt the need to have a second line of defense. Chiefly with this end in view, the National Cadet Corps was formed by the government as per the N.C.C. Act of 1948.
The aims and objectives of this organization are to make the students of our country defense conscious. The independence of our country has to be held at all costs. If the Young men of our country are not conscious of their responsibility from an early age in this respect, little can be expected of them when the real danger comes. Secondly, national patriotism can be instilled into their minds in good time, so to prepare them for the Supreme Sacrifice at the time of need.
The government made N.C.C. training for all fit boys and girls in schools and colleges. They are to be properly trained by some military officers at different times and in different places in our country. They are primarily taught to be disciplined, punctual, and obedient. People are also given military training about how to defend the country against foreign aggression. This apart, they are trained on how to save drowning people, how to put out fires, how to control the angry mob in a riot. How to maintain peace and order at school and college functions and how to render social services.
The three wings of the N.C.C.
There are chiefly three wings of N.C.C. They are the Army wing, the Air force wing, and the Naval wing. Trained teachers are posted in charge of these wings. They select their students who are enrolled as cadets. They do regular parades and drills, which helps them to grow strong and keep physically fit for hard work.
N.C.C. at schools and colleges and the annual camping
Senior wings function at colleges and junior wings at schools. Every year these cadets go for annual camping to different places for a period of one fortnight. This helps them to gain experience in outdoor camp life. Here they undergo training under military officers. The teachers in charge of different wings accompany them. Here the cadets get an opportunity to mix together.
Besides parades and drills, they have games and sports, dance and music, fancy dress competitions, caricatures, songs and dramas, art and drawing competitions, and such-like other events of merriment. Prizes are given to the winners for their best performances. This annual camping help to develop the feelings of goodwill and togetherness, team spirit, the spirit of self-help, the quality of leadership, and a sense of responsibility. They teach them to develop a sense of national integration i.e., the sense of living in unity in spite of their cultural and religious diversity.
Training is given to teachers.
The teachers in charge of these wings also take refresher courses. When they come back, they train their cadets in the light of their own training.
How it is helpful to students and society
The cadets also render useful social services during an emergency by helping the flood-stricken, cyclone-hit, and drought-affected people.
The main attraction of the N.C.C. is that it helps young students to get jobs in the defense force. Last but not least, it helps them grow into useful citizens of our country.
