What is the metaverse? The future of virtual reality

Metaverse is the future digital world of the internet that would combine social media, online gaming, with immersive VR and AR technologies, resulting in online 3D virtual environments. Also known as the “future of the internet and virtual reality”. This would be accessible through VR headsets, AR glasses, smartphones, PCs, and gaming consoles.

 What is the metaverse?

In his 1999 paper “Beyond Strange loop: The Metaverse: A conceptual exploration of personal virtual reality,” researcher Nick Mont fort proposed the concept of the metaverse. In the paper, he defines a metaverse as a scalable, constantly updated, intuitive, decentralized, peer-to-peer, global, persistent, online 3D virtual reality environment. In the current internet model, users rely on servers to provide a high-bandwidth network. Users can add content to their online profiles using a website called the “Social Graph,” but content can also be uploaded and hosted on individual user-controlled servers.

 The future of virtual reality

VR technology is at the very beginning of its lifecycle. While there have been some early implementations of virtual reality devices, the technology is in its infancy. VR technology will continue to improve as more devices enter the market, as well as better hardware, software, and content.

What will this massive scale of VR technology support in the future? That's the question that keeps an active community of virtual reality developers and hardware enthusiasts busy today.

While we wait to see what major innovations the future will bring, we can consider what the metaverse could mean for your digital footprint, how you will live your digital life, and how it could change the way we all interact with our digital networks.

What are some potential benefits of the metaverse?

There are a number of potential benefits to be had from a scalable metaverse, which will have to be re-evaluated over time. These include:

Gaining the experience of “hyper-local” global interaction, without the privacy concerns inherent in relying on the current web. No more “chasing the mouse around the screen”, trying to juggle multiple web browsers, and searching for parts of an image online. Increased accessibility, since the internet will no longer be limited to a single platform. No more “one-click shopping”, since products can be accessed through a 3D interface, and more than just buying items can be done through multisensory tools.

What are some potential disadvantages of the metaverse?

One of the obvious disadvantages of metaverse would be hyperreality; The inability for further human generations to distinguish natural reality from simulated reality, as they might be too addicted and brainwashed in 3D virtual worlds of metaverse and technology. Such technology might also overstimulate our senses. Ultimately, separating us from natural reality.

 Conclusion

The internet of tomorrow will be unlike anything we've seen before, and understanding the technology powering the internet of tomorrow will be more important than ever. Though it can be difficult to predict the future of the internet, the research and capabilities of the people researching this area have never been better. You can be a part of this effort and help ensure that the technology powering the internet of tomorrow is a safe, open, and accessible space that you and your family can enjoy for years to come.
