What is the mesozoic era ?

The Mesozoic Era, spanning approximately 180 million years, is often referred to as the Age of Reptiles and is divided into three major periods: the Triassic, Jurassic, and Cretaceous. It is a pivotal time in Earth's history, witnessing significant geological and biological changes that laid the foundation for the diverse ecosystems we see today.

The Mesozoic Era began around 252 million years ago, following the mass extinction event that marked the end of the Paleozoic Era. During this period, the Earth's landmasses were still united as the supercontinent Pangaea. However, as the Mesozoic progressed, Pangaea began to break apart, eventually giving rise to the continents we know today.

Triassic Period

The Mesozoic Era came to an abrupt end around 66 million years ago, with one of the most cataclysmic events in Earth's history – the Cretaceous-Paleogene (K-Pg) extinction event. This mass extinction led to the demise of the non-avian dinosaurs and many other plant and animal species. The exact cause of this event is believed to be a combination of factors, including a massive asteroid impact in present-day Mexico and intensified volcanic activity.

Despite the end of the Mesozoic dinosaurs, some of their descendants, such as birds, survived and flourished in the following era, the Cenozoic. Mammals, which had been present throughout the Mesozoic but generally limited in size and diversity, now had an opportunity to fill the ecological niches left vacant by the extinct dinosaurs. This led to the eventual rise of mammals as the dominant terrestrial vertebrates in the Cenozoic Era.
