Officially International Friendship Day is celebrated on 30th July, many countries like India and Bangladesh celebrate it on the first Sunday of August. This year it will be celebrated in India on 1st August. It is also celebrated on 30th July in many other parts of the world. The tradition of dedicating a day in honor of friends started in America in 1935. Gradually this festival gained popularity, and today, Friendship Day is celebrated in many countries, including India.
In the history of our country India, there is not so much history about Friendship Day as we celebrate it today. However, many legends, folktales, and many examples in mythology suggest that friends and friendship have been valued since the beginning of the civilized world. As intrinsically social animals, males prefer to make friends to advance this process of socialization.
Keeping in view the valuable role of friends in our personal and social life, it was considered appropriate to have a day dedicated to friends and friendship. In 1935 the United States Congress declared the first Sunday of August as National Friendship Day. Since then, the celebration of National Friendship Day has become an annual event. A noble idea to honor the beautiful relationship of friendship between people, and soon Friendship Day became a hugely popular festival. Following the popularity and success of Friendship Day in America, many other countries adopted the tradition of dedicating a day to friends. Today Friendship Day is celebrated with enthusiasm by many countries around the world, including India. In 1997, the United Nations named Winnie the Pooh the Ambassador of Friendship of the World.
Importance of friendship in Mahabharat
In the famous epic Mahabharata, the friendship of Karna and Duryodhana displays many shades - affection, trust, brotherhood, protection, guidance, intimacy, and even teasing. Friendship is all about these and much more. The friendship of Karna and Duryodhana is mentioned in the Mahabharata. ... Then Duryodhana, the eldest of the Kauravas, declared Karna as Angaraja so that he would be worthy of a duel with Arjuna. When Karna asked Duryodhana what he wanted from him in return, Duryodhana said he only wanted Karna to become his friend. Karna's character embodies friendship who selflessly agreed to fight even against his own brothers, the Pandavas, to maintain his friendship with Duryodhana. He not only fought against his own brothers, but they also sacrificed their lives in their selfless friendship with Duryodhana.
Friendship is one of the most beautiful relationships that have developed since the beginning of humanity. Apart from immediate blood ties, friends are the most valuable person in one's life. Friendships usually develop with similar ages, similar groups, similar natures, and similar interests. Friends usually come together to pursue their common interests, share their joys and sorrows, and help those in need, emotionally or otherwise. It is only natural that a special day is set aside in the year to celebrate this beautiful relationship.
Friendship is a beautiful feeling. As long as we feel friendly towards our fellow human beings and all other living beings, there will be no enmity, and we can all live a peaceful and blissful life together.
