Eid Milad-un-Nabi, also known as 12 Rabi ul Awal is celebrated on the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awal. Rabbi-ul-Awal is the third month in the calendar of Islamic months. This holy month is significant for Muslims because their beloved Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was born today.
Muslims Ummah worldwide celebrates this great day with all their heart to show great devotion and cooperation with their Prophet (SAW). Mosques, homes, and other business buildings seem to be lit up with green lights and green flags on this beautiful day. People decorate their homes and even the streets and alleys with all their might to show great joy on this day.
Birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW):
About 570 AD, Muhammad (SAW) was born in Mecca, Arabia, and died in 632 in Madinah. It is believed that he (SAW) was born on Monday as a Sahih Muslim Hadith, quoting that Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) was born on Monday:
When asked by the Messenger of Allah (SAW) about fasting on Monday, he replied, "That is the day I was born and the day I received the Revelation." - Sahih Muslim.
The year in which the Prophet (SAW) was born is also known as the year of the elephant. It is because this year, Allah protected the Kaaba from the invading army of Abyssin with elephants. The event is narrated in the elephant chapter (Quran Ch. 105).
Al-Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Qais Bin Makhramah recounts his father, who discusses his grandfather, who said:
"The Messenger of Allah (SAW) and I were born in the year of the Elephant." -Tirmidhi Sahih.
Miracles at the Birth of Prophet Muhammad (SAW):
the mother of Prophet Muhammad (SAW) Aminah narrated that she did not suffer any regular pregnancy pains like other women. (Ibn Ishaq)
Before the birth of the Prophet, his mother had a dream and gave birth to a great light that spread to the palaces of Busra in Syria. (Ibn Ishaq)
The night he was born, it was reported that a great light from the lamp illuminated the whole house. (Ibn Hajar Fath Al-Bari)
The fire that had been burning for 100 years had been extinguished in Persia. (Al Raheeq Al Maktum)
The life of Prophet Muhammad (SAW):
The father of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is Hazrat Abdullah, who died before the birth of his son. Then, at the age of six, Muhammad (SAW) also lost his mother. Therefore, his grandfather (SAW) Abdul Muttalib raised him, and when he died, his uncle (SAW) Abu Talib took responsibility for his upbringing (SAW).
Forty years later, he received a revelation from God. The angel Gabriel appeared to Hira Cave and instructed her (SAW) to read these words of God:
“Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; Sing to your Lord with great generosity…. ”(Surah Al Alaq, Ch 96: 1
Muhammad (SAW) then began to spread God's message to the people of Makkah, who were obsessed with evil deeds and superstitions. However, the Messenger of Allah showed them the way to righteousness and goodness, which led them to become great Muslims and good people. Furthermore, he told them that pursuing the right course is the only way to gain God's favor and blessing. He also warned them to turn from the practice of Satan, their archenemy. Finally, because he struggled with his teachings (SAW), the light of Islam was illuminated in Arabia and the world.
Public Holiday:
During the 12th Rabi-ul-Awal, a national public holiday is celebrated in Pakistan and other Muslim countries. In Arabic, this day is known as the Mawlid Al-Nabawi holiday; however, it is called the Eid Milad-un-Nabi holiday in Pakistan.
The Teachings of Prophet Muhammad (SAW):
12 Rabi-ul-Awal is an excellent day for recognizing the Muslim Ummah that Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) was sent for its conversion, so they should follow his changes and teachings. On this particular day, Muslims pledge allegiance to the Sunnah of their beloved Prophet (SAW). For it is a fact that their success and progress are hidden only in following the teachings of their Prophet.
Special Prayers with Salawat on 12 Rabi-ul-Awal:
On the 12th of Rabi-ul-Awal, Muslims perform special prayers to Muslims, and countless Salawat (Darood Sharif) is sent to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW). The importance of sending Salawat to the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) is paramount, so on this day, Muslims try to read Darood Sharif increasingly.
“Indeed, Allah and His angels sent blessings to the Prophet. O you who believe, send your salutation to him (SAW) in abundance. ”(Al-Ahzab: 33:56)
Special Events:
On the blessed day of 12 Rabi-ul-Awal, special events are held on the subject of 'Seerat-e-Nabwi,' and Muslim scholars spread awareness about the great Serat (life) of Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Scholars highlight the various aspects of the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (SAW) and how important it is to follow his Sunnah.
Naat Competitions:
Apart from events that highlight the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW), there are also Naatia contests and quiz programs at the local and national levels. Participants greeted the Naats with full enthusiasm for sending tribute to the Holy Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) wholeheartedly and devotedly.
Rallies:
Special rallies and protests take place on this special day by the people. They wear ‘Green Turbans’ and blue flags and raise their hands (following the Sunnah of the Prophet (SAW) because it is believed to be the color green they like) in honor of their Holy Prophet Muhammad (SAW). Besides, people cook unique kinds of food on this day. They distribute them freely among people in homes, on the streets, and in the military.
Muhammad (saw) as the Guiding Light for all humanity:
The personality of Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) is an example for all of us. His teachings serve as a beacon of light in the darkness, not only for the Muslim community but for all humanity. This source of light and guidance can guide us on the right path, God's proper way.
