The first school of any person is his family, and mother is said to be the first Guru. Education is that weapon, with the help of which one can face the biggest difficulties. It is the education through which we come to know the difference between right and wrong. Its importance can be gauged from the fact that if you don't get bread for one time, it will work, but education must be given. Getting education is the right of every living being.
Our country has been the center of education since ancient times. Education in India has a rich and interesting history. It is believed that in the ancient days, education was given orally by sages and scholars and information was passed on from one generation to another. After the development of letters, it took the form of writing using palm leaves and tree bark. It also helped in the spread of written literature. Temples and community centers formed the role of schools. Later, the Gurkha system of education came into existence.
Education plays an important role in the society. Education itself creates our knowledge, transfers it to the students and promotes new knowledge. Modernization is a process of sociocultural change. It is a chain of change involving values, norms, institutions and structures. According to the sociological point of view, education is not according to the individual needs of the individual, but it arises out of the needs of the society of which the individual is a member. In a stable society, the main function of the education system is to pass on the cultural heritage to the new generations. But in the changing society, its nature keeps changing from generation to generation and in such a society the educational system should not only be taken as cultural heritage but also help in preparing the youth to adjust to the changes in them. And this lays the foundation for future possibilities. Skilled people are prepared in modern educational institutions, whose scientific and technical knowledge leads to industrial development of the country. Other values like individualism and universalist ethics etc. can also be inculcated through education. Thus, education can be an important tool of modernization. The importance of education can be realized from the fact that all modern societies insist on universalization of education and in ancient days, education was focused for a particular group. But with the modernization of education, now everyone has the facility to get education irrespective of their caste, religion, culture and economic background.
The effect of modernization can be seen in schools as well. Modern day schools are fully equipped with technically sound equipments which help the children to develop their expertise in a more articulate manner. Effective facilities provide barrier-free means for persons with disabilities, are free of health and environmental hazards, provide ample space for students and teachers, and are equipped with appropriate technology for classroom and instructional use.
The current teaching system requires more flexibility in classroom spaces than a classroom system. For example, students working together in small groups may use shared spaces between classes at some new elementary schools in the district.
