But at that time, Indra Dev, the god of rain, was pleased with the devotion of Rishi Gautam, so he used to make rain in his ashram itself, due to which many Brahmins started living in the ashram of Gautam Rishi. Then once the wives of other sages became angry with Gautam Rishi's wife Ahilya Devi over something, they inspired their respective husbands to insult Gautam Rishi to hurt the feelings of Ahilya Devi. After which, all the Brahmins made a plan to humiliate Rishi Gautam. And then the Brahmins accused Gautam Rishi of killing a cow by deceit and advised Gautam Rishi to take a bath in Goddess Ganga to atone for his sins. After which, Gautam Rishi went to Brahma Giri mountain and did severe penance of Lord Shiva and asked for the boon of Goddess Ganga incarnating at that place. But Goddess Ganga agreed to incarnate on the condition that when Lord Bhole Shankar stays at this place, only then will she flow at this place. After which, at the behest of Goddess Ganga, Shiva agreed to reside there in the form of Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga, and thus Trimbakeshwar Jyotirlinga manifested itself here. The Ganges river started flowing from here in the form of Gautami. Let us tell you that the Gautami river is also known as the Godavari.
