M.S. Dhoni is an Indian cricket player who was born in Ranchi, Bihar (now Jharkhand) state, on July 7, 1981. His ascent to fame in the early 21st century culminated with him leading the Indian national team to victory in the 2011 One-Day Cricket World Cup.
In 2004, Dhoni made his debut abroad. In his fifth international match, he scored 148 runs against Pakistan, showcasing his skill with the bat. After a year, he was called up to the Indian Test team, where he made an immediate impression by scoring a century (100 runs or more in an innings) against Pakistan. In 2007, Dhoni assumed leadership of the one-day team despite his lack of experience, and he guided India to the Twenty20 (T20) world championship. India rose to the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Test rankings for the first time in December 2009, thanks to series victories against Australia and Sri Lanka, among other opponents. In 2008 and 2009, Dhoni received the ICC One Day International Player of the Year Award in recognition of his performance. In front of his home crowd in Mumbai, Dhoni's spectacular performance of 91 not out in the 2011 one-day World Cup set the stage for India's victory over Sri Lanka in the championship match. Additionally, he guided India to a World Cup semifinal participation in 2015. After captaining his team in 331 international matches—the most for any captain in the history of the sport—Dhoni stepped down from the position in 2017.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) was founded in 2008 as a result of the growth of Twenty20 cricket on the Indian subcontinent. Dhoni got a $1.5 million contract with the Chennai Super Kings in the league's first season, which at the time was the highest deal in the IPL. After that, he guided the group to two straight championships (2010) and (2011). Due to the Super Kings' involvement in a match-fixing controversy, the IRL suspended them for two seasons in 2016. Following this, Dhoni signed with the Rising Pune Supergiant. He rejoined the Chennai Super Kings in 2018, and the squad went on to win the IPL title in both 2018 and 2021.
The popular Bollywood film M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story (2016) focused on Dhoni's life.
