Why healthy lifestyle is compulsory

21st century is best characterized by the advent of ultra-modern technology, global trade and business, and an unstoppable desire to get and stay ahead. Because of these factors, business corporations compete in a world where the economy is active 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This phenomenon created a demand for employees who would work even at night until the late hours of the morning. This work schedule turned the employees' lifestyles around and made a day for them to sleep. Shifts can disrupt normal bodily functions, disrupt sleep cycles, and lower serotonin levels in the body. Serotonin is a neurotransmitter found in the central nervous system that affects various functions such as mood, sleep and appetite. This neurotransmitter can also promote cell regeneration.

Studies show that non-day shift workers tend to have lower levels of "feel-good" hormones called serotonin. Researchers from the University of Buenos Aires led by Dr. Carlos J. Pirolo studied 683 men and compared 437 day workers with 246 shift workers. The results, shift workers' serotonin levels, as measured by blood tests, were significantly lower than those in regular day programs. In addition to reduced serotonin levels, shift workers were also found to have higher cholesterol, hip-to-waist ratio, increased blood pressure and higher triglyceride levels.

Since serotonin levels control sleep patterns and other bodily functions, a University of Buenos Aires study suggested that shift work may also lead to what is known as shift sleep disorder. People with this disorder tend to stay awake when they should be asleep. These individuals may be very tired during waking hours. This disorder occurs because of the schedule work that takes place during normal sleep. Because of this, people who have trouble sleeping because their bodies are still programmed to be awake. Sleep and wake times differ from what the body's internal clock expects.

Other studies have also found that non-standard and night shifts can affect the cardiovascular and metabolic systems. These studies suggest that there is a possibility that shift work is directly responsible for high blood pressure and increased body fat, according to study researchers from Buenos Aires. In addition to disrupting sleep patterns, reduced serotonin levels are also associated with other conditions such as stress, anxiety, and depression.

Lifestyle changes can lead to improved serotonin levels. In order for serotonin levels to be consistent, sleep patterns should be consistent and dietary regimens should include the necessary vitamins and minerals to control serotonin levels. Certain medications and substances, such as caffeine, nicotine, alcohol, and antidepressants, should be avoided because they can decrease serotonin production.

Individuals who want to improve their serotonin levels can use medication to help them achieve their goal. The amino acid 5-HTP can be taken as a supplement and improves the body's ability to produce serotonin. Another amino acid called L-tryptophan is used by the body to produce serotonin. However, patients are advised to seek approval from doctors and other healthcare professionals before taking these supplements. Individuals who choose to work at night should maintain adequate rest to alleviate any nausea that may develop. A healthy lifestyle and nutritious diet can improve serotonin levels and improve quality of life.
