What is the Gateways for the Internet of Things (IoT)

As a bridge between various communication protocols, a gateway serves as a conduit for connections between cloud computing and controllers, or sensors and devices, in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). You can create device to device or device to cloud connectivity with the use of gateways. A software application or a standard hardware device can serve as a gateway.

Along with facilitating IoT communication and establishing a connection between the sensor network and the Internet, it also carries out a host of other functions. For example, this IoT gateway can translate protocols, aggregate all data, process and filter data locally before sending it to the cloud, store data locally, control devices autonomously based on inputted data, and provide extra device security. IoT gateways facilitate connection between sensors and the cloud (data system), as seen in the above figure. 

IoT devices are energy constrained due to their low power consumption (battery power); hence, direct communication to the cloud or Internet will not be efficient in terms of electricity. Because they use less power, they link to the gateway via short range wireless transmission modes and networks like blue tooth, ZigBee, and so on. Alternatively, they can connect via long range networks like cellular and WiFi. Then, utilizing an Ethernet, WiFi/cellular, or satellite connection, the gateway connects them to the Internet or cloud by transforming data into a standard protocol like MQTT.

Furthermore, unlike sensor nodes, which run on batteries, gateways are often powered by the mains. There are several Gateway devices in use. When we consider a basic IoT gateway, our smart phone comes into play. It can function as a basic IoT gateway when we use multiple radio technologies, such as WiFi, Bluetooth, and the mobile phone's cellular network, to work on any IoT project and send and receive data at that same time.
