What role will entertainment and shopping play in the future? the hub for knowledge acquisition and exchange, enabling people to grow intellectually and obtain a deeper understanding of the world.
Connie Chan, General Partner at Andreessen Horowitz, provided an answer.Shopatainment, or the fusion of commerce, entertainment, and content, is the way that shopping will be done in the future. I believe that instead of only watching television, we will be binge watching stores in the future because videos are both really engaging and a great method to promote products. We've known this for decades, which is why infomercials, ads, HSN, and QVC are so successful. Storytelling is made possible by video; you can interview actual customers to generate even more social proof, show off before and after comparisons, and illustrate how to use products. Imagine being able to buy straight from the catwalk during a fashion show, or more precisely, picture an influencer showcasing their shopping haul and being able to buy the same products such that the influencer is paid a commission. In this instance, the entertainment is the influencer's invention, the commerce is the one-click buy, and the entertainment is the remark on the apparel.
There's a lot more possibilities here than just individual sellers. It will, in my opinion, mature into a complete ecosystem that consists of:
1. Current online retailers will incorporate video as an extra function.
2. Fresh platforms for shopatainment tailored to verticals
3. Brand-new horizontal retail platforms
Current non-e-commerce platforms with shopatainment elements integrated.
As I recently discussed, performances are destined to become high-fidelity productions, even though the earliest shopatainment examples in the West were made in people's homes or in inexpensive setups. Furthermore, this is not a winner-take-all situation, despite the fact that there are American startups competing in this market and other established e-commerce brands who are logically considering adding live shopping as an extra option. In the end, I think that any prosperous internet store of the future will eventually rely more on video than on conventional photo-based listings. Shopatainment combines elements of supply chain management, theater, gaming shows, art, and auction houses.
