Among the leading causes of death in India, air pollution has surged to the fifth position. The Global Burden of Disease (GBD) released data unique to India and cautioned that in 2010, outdoor air pollution resulted in 17.7 million lost healthy years of life and 627,000 deaths. In 2010, outdoor air pollution resulted in almost 74 million years of lost healthy life and 3.2 million premature deaths worldwide. Growing amounts of particulate matter pollution are directly responsible for a significant increase in chronic obstructive lung diseases, strokes, and cardiovascular illnesses in India in 2010. South Asia accounts for two thirds of the global disease graph that is on the rise.

Air pollution is the fifth largest killer in India taking 6.2 lakh lives per year and Delhi is among one of the five most critically polluted regions in the country,a study by a US-based health institute has claimed.Delhi is the most polluted cities in the world.air pollution is cutting down lives of South Asians by about 5 years.findings released by the scientists behind the study at a dialogue workshop organised by centre for science and environment, India council of medical research and US-based health effects institute.
