How Healthy Sleep Habits Can Improve Quality of Life
Quality sleep plays a significant role in enhancing quality of life indicators such as happiness, well-being, and life satisfaction, as revealed by a study published in PLOS One. The research highlights that the quality of sleep matters more than its duration. Consistent bedtime routines and lifestyle adjustments are key to achieving restorative sleep.
The study analyzed data from the Czech Household Panel Survey (2018–2020) and is the first of its kind to assess the long-term effects of “social jet lag” on quality of life. Social jet lag occurs when biological sleep rhythms and socially dictated schedules conflict, such as for night-shift workers. Researchers compared life satisfaction, subjective health, happiness, and work stress with self-reported sleep quality and timing. Results showed a strong correlation between quality sleep and improved life satisfaction, well-being, happiness, and health. However, social jet lag and sleep duration had no significant long-term impact on these factors.
Experts agree on the importance of quality sleep. Neuropsychologist Sanam Hafeez emphasizes how factors like stress, health issues, and lifestyle habits such as smoking or lack of exercise can reduce sleep quality. Shelby Harris, a licensed clinical psychologist, also notes that quality sleep boosts mood, decision-making skills, memory, and overall health. Poor sleep, on the other hand, can lead to chronic physical and mental health problems like cardiovascular disease and depression.
To improve sleep quality, experts recommend maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, exposing yourself to natural light in the morning, and practicing good sleep hygiene. Avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bedtime, limit screen use before sleeping, and try relaxation techniques like meditation and muscle relaxation. For persistent sleep issues, consulting a specialist or visiting a sleep clinic is advised.
