The James Webb Telescope, currently being constructed, will replace the Hubble Telescope as the biggest and most powerful in the world when it goes into space in 2021. Its construction has been delayed by four years due to concerns about its weight and budget, but now that it’s back on track and moving forward with full force, it’s time to look at how this telescope will be different from the one it’s replacing. Here are some of the key differences between them and how they’ll affect their uses.

What exactly is the James Webb Telescope?

The James Webb Telescope is a large space telescope, often called a next-generation successor to the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. The JWST was formerly known as Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST), and before that, as First Light Space Observatory (FLO). It has been under development for at least 15 years.

How can it see objects farther away than Hubble?

To accomplish its goals, Webb’s primary mirror has to have a diameter of 6.5 meters (21 feet). But that is just one factor: The telescope needs to collect enough light to reveal objects three times fainter than those seen by Hubble, but do so over twice as large an area in order to reduce noise.

How big is the James Webb Telescope?

The largest part of the telescope, its 6.5-meter-wide segmented primary mirror, measures 21 feet (6.4 meters) across — more than twice as wide as that of NASA’s famous Hubble Space Telescope. In fact, if you put a person inside it, he or she would fit with room to spare.
