What is the biology of hair growth?

There’s nothing in life as simple as it seems, so it should come as no surprise that the hair strand you found on your brush this morning is an incredibly complex part of your body. Hair begins to appear on the human body while in the womb. By the time a developing fetus reaches 22 weeks of age, our body already has almost five million hair follicles. Amazingly, that is all the hair follicles that will grow no matter how long we live. Nothing will be added. 

 

Human scalp hair is a highly noticeable element engaged in sexual and social signifying, a useful supplier of forensic and biological study data, and mostly a characteristic of personal style or cultural identity.

Research on the variety of human hair structures is greatly related to those whose study is based on human biology and human evolution. Human scalp hair is a significant element of modern human development. Hair fibers consist of complicated forms that can differ in sound structures among people and across an individual’s scalp.

 

Hair Anatomy

Hair contains a follicle implanted in the skin and a hair shaft present on our body. The follicle itself contains many layers; each layer has a distinct role. The papilla is lying at the bottom of the hair follicles. Capillaries are attached to the papilla and carry blood to cells around the lower part of the hair follicle called the bulb.

Around this follicle, there are two parts, internal and external, formed to save the hair shaft from damage and to assist it to grow properly. The inner part runs close to the hair follicle and ends in the sebaceous gland. The outer part runs down to the anterior end of the erector pili muscle. This is the muscle that causes our hair to "stand" while contracting.

 

The hair follicle contains three layers of dead protein cells called keratin. The inner layer, known as the medulla, does not always appear on the hair shaft. The second layer, known as the cortex, provides the major part of the hair shaft. Hair color is greatly determined by the color of the layer. The outer layer is called the cuticle. This outer cuticle is composed of 5–10 interrelating keratinized cells, and these cells hide such as to, of surfaces and provide protection from environmental and mechanical loss to the hair. The shine and gloss of hair come from the cuticle.

 

How Hair Grows Scalp

Hair grows at a rate of between six inches per year, or only .3-.4 mm per day. There are three definite phases of hair growth. - Catagen Phase- This temporary phase is active for about two to three weeks. At any given time, about 3% of your hair is in this category. There is no hair growth while the outer part of the hair follicle shortens and sticks to the root.

- Telogen Phase- This phase, known as the “rest period,” deals with about 15% of your hair. Telogen lasts about 100 days for scalp hair and is much longer than other body hair.

 

-Anagen Phase-within a hair follicle, the active growth phase is called Anagen. This stage describes the duration of activity during which hair cells divide, and new hair growth occurs. This stage can last for two to six years. Short growing periods show people having trouble growing their long hair.

 

Hair Growth Disorders

Two hair growth problems affect people. Hirsutism is a condition that mainly affects women. It is described as a condition where overgrown black and black hair is found in male-dominated areas. These areas include the chest, face, and areolae or the area around the nipple.

Hypertrichosis is a condition that causes excessive hair growth in areas of the body where visible hair is rarely present. Both conditions are treatable.
