Beijing, China (Reuters) -Major portions of China were hit by intensely cold weather on Thursday, and several southern regions are expected to experience significant temperature reductions over the next few days, according to Chinese weather analysts.
The cold snap is extensive, extending deep into the lower reaches of the Yangtze River Delta region from central and southern regions like Guizhou province to northern China, where numerous provinces have already seen blizzards.
According to meteorological analyst Wang Weiyue, this cold wave is strong and will make a significant move south later this week, as reported by CCTV official television.
National weather forecasters said that northerly winds have moved into many parts of China and that temperatures will drop. Some northeastern cities, including Shenyang and Harbin, recorded lows of minus 26 to 27 degrees Celsius (minus 17 degrees Fahrenheit) until December 18, which would be the lowest readings for the cities so far this year, according to the national broadcaster CCTV.
Social media weather maps and charts showed how quickly the weather is getting worse, especially in the south, with temperatures dropping by more than 14 or even 20 degrees Celsius in large areas of southern provinces.
On the social media platform Weibo, a user commented, "Finally know what it means to freeze purple," alluding to the color codes of the nation's coldest regions.
A number of locations have seen record-low temperatures for the second day in a row. China's National Meteorological Center (NMC) said that strong wind gusts and temperature reductions of over 20 degrees Celsius were experienced in parts of the Inner Mongolia area, Shaanxi, Jilin, and Liaoning provinces.
Weather forecasters also issued gale warnings for regions of Inner Mongolia, Xinjiang, western Tibet, Ningxia region, and Qinghai province.
194 roads, including 126 highways in multiple provinces, had to be closed due to snow and ice, according to CCTV, which cited the Ministry of Transportation.
