Why is teacher day celebrated in India?
Teacher's Day in India is celebrated as the birthday of former President Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan. He had expressed his desire to his students to celebrate this Day as Teacher's Day. Dr. Radhakrishnan was born on September 5, 1888, in Tirumani, Tamil Nadu. When he became the President of India, some of his students and friends came to meet him and requested him to celebrate his birthday. Then he said that instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be proud for me if it was marked as Teacher's Day. From that time till today, Teacher's Day is celebrated on the birthday of former President Radhakrishnan.

Radhakrishnan was honored with many high awards during his life, including a knighthood in 1931, the Bharat Ratna, India's highest civilian award in 1954, and honorary membership of the British Royal Order of Merit in 1963. He was also one of the founders. Of Helpage India, a non-profit organization for the underprivileged elderly in India. Radhakrishnan believed that "teachers should be the best minds in the country." Since 1962 his birthday has been celebrated every year on September 5 as Teacher's Day in India.
