What is Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), also known as fuel or renewable jet fuel, is an alternative to traditional fossil fuel-based aviation fuel. It is derived from sustainable and renewable sources, such as biomass, waste oils, or agricultural residues. SAF is designed to reduce the carbon emissions associated with aviation and mitigate the environmental impact of air travel.

Key points about sustainable aviation fuel include:

  1. Reduction of Carbon Emissions: SAF is considered a more sustainable option for aviation because it has the potential to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions compared to conventional jet fuel. It offers a way to lower the carbon footprint of the aviation industry, which is a significant contributor to global emissions.

  2. Feedstock Diversity: Sustainable aviation fuel can be produced from a variety of feedstocks, including non-edible plant oils, algae, municipal waste, and agricultural residues. This diversity helps reduce reliance on fossil fuels and promotes the use of renewable resources.

  3. Blending with Conventional Jet Fuel: SAF can be blended with traditional jet fuel and used in existing aircraft engines without requiring modifications or changes to infrastructure. Blends of up to 50% SAF are already approved for use in commercial aviation.

  4. Certification Standards: SAF must meet specific sustainability criteria to be considered as a viable option. Certification programs such as the Roundtable on Sustainable Biomaterials (RSB) and the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification provide guidelines and verification processes to ensure the sustainability and traceability of SAF production.

  5. Scalability and Availability: The production and availability of sustainable aviation fuel are still limited compared to conventional jet fuel. However, efforts are underway to scale up production capacity and increase its availability, driven by industry commitments, government incentives, and collaboration between stakeholders.

  6. Composition: Aviation fuel is primarily derived from crude oil through a refining process. The most commonly used type of aviation fuel is Jet A or Jet A-1, which is a kerosene-based fuel. It has a relatively high energy density and low freezing point, making it suitable for use in a wide range of aircraft and weather conditions.

  7. Specifications: Aviation fuel must meet specific international standards and specifications to ensure its quality and performance. These standards, such as ASTM D1655 or Def Stan 91-91, define parameters such as flash point, viscosity, density, and distillation range to ensure safe and reliable operation of aircraft engines.

  8. Additives: To enhance performance and safety, aviation fuel may contain additives. These additives can include corrosion inhibitors, lubricity enhancers, anti-static agents, and fuel system icing inhibitors.     Prevent the formation of ice crystals at low temperatures and high altitudes, where the fuel can be susceptible to icing.

  9. Jet Fuel Grades: Jet fuel is available in different grades to accommodate specific aircraft requirements and operating conditions. Jet A and Jet A-1 are the most common grades used for commercial aviation, while Jet B is a less common type that is primarily used in cold weather operations.

  10. Environmental Impact: Aviation fuel is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, primarily due to the combustion of fossil fuels. To address this impact, there is increasing interest and development of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which is derived from renewable sources and can help reduce the carbon footprint of aviation.
