The Myrtle Ocean side News was established as a week by week in 1935 by brothers by marriage C. L. Phillips and J. Clarence Macklen. Local businesses approached them to produce a local newspaper after they had just started a printing business. It was sold to Mark Garner, publisher of the Myrtle Beach Sun, Myrtle Beach's other newspaper, in 1961. The Sun News, which Garner merged from the two, began publishing twice weekly shortly after. The newspaper increased the frequency with which it was published as a result of the rapid expansion that took place over the following fifty years as the Grand Strand developed into a major tourist destination and retirement community. By the year 1977, it had become a full-fledged daily. It was eventually purchased by The State Record Company in 1973[3]. In 1986, it merged with the Knight Ridder newspaper chain with the rest of the State Record Company. When McClatchy purchased Knight Ridder in June 2006, it became the parent company of The Sun News. In 2020, McClatchy filed for bankruptcy, and Chatham Asset Management purchased the business for $312 million. The Myrtle Ocean side News was established as a week by week in 1935 by brothers by marriage C.
