"Cortisol is understood to trigger a domino effect that travels along tight wiring between hippocampus and amygdala, resulting in a spike in the brain's activity"that can create a vicious cycle of fighting or flight. Stress is a chain reaction, explained by Harvard Health Publications. The Harvard Medical School explained in the publication that "when a person experiences a stressful event, his or her amygdala, a part of the brain that is emotionally involved, sends a signal of distress to the hypothalamus."

This "fight or flight" reaction is responsible for the outward bodily reactions most people associate with stress, including increased heart rate, increased sensation, increased oxygen consumption, and a rush of adrenaline. In the process, a hormone called cortisol is released, which helps restore the energy lost in the reaction. When the stress is over, cortisol levels fall, and the body returns to stagnation.
