All physical activities that, through informal,  involvement, attempt to express or improve physical fitness and mental wellbeing, create social bonds, or achieve results in competition at all levels are considered sports. Sport, contest, or activity that requires physical effort and ability, is played or performed in accordance with rules, and is done for fun or as a job: Team sports include basketball, hockey, and football. Winter sports like skating and skiing are fun for me.

In a 2015 poll conducted by Harvard University, National Public Radio, and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, over 90% of parents indicated that sports encouraged their kids to good discipline, and 81 percent claimed that sports helped their kids stay healthy.

According to Donna Merkel, a sports clinical specialist who published about the effects of childhood sports for the Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine, teenager athletes do in fact tend to be physically fit, keep occupied, and stay out of trouble.

But there are many more advantages to participating in sports. Teen athletes have lower rates of smoking and using illicit substances. Athletes have lower rates of teen pregnancy and suicide, but higher levels of self-esteem.

Any type of competitive physical activity or game[1] with the goal of utilising, preserving, or enhancing physical prowess and abilities while bringing delight to participants and, in some situations, amusement to viewers is considered to be a sport. [2] The physical health of participants in sports can be improved by informal or formal engagement. There are several sports, ranging from those with just one competitor to those with hundreds of players playing at once, either in teams or individually. In some sports, like racing, there may be numerous competitors who compete concurrently or consecutively with a single winner; in other sports, the competition (a match) is between two teams who are competing to outperform one another. There can be a "tie" or "draw" in some sports, and other sports include tie-breaking procedures to assure that there is one victor and one loser.

In fact, teen athletes do tend to be physically fit and stay busy and out of trouble, says Donna Merkel, a sports clinical specialist who wrote about the impact of youth sports for the Open Access Journal of Sports Medicine.

 

But the benefits of playing sports are even broader. Teen athletes are less likely to smoke or do illegal drugs. Teen pregnancy and suicide rates are lower among athletes, while levels of self-esteem are higher.

Benefits turn up in the classroom, too. Teens who are active in sports and other extracurricular activities are better at setting goals and managing their time, according to several studies Merkel cites.

 

“When you look at kids who participate in sports, generally they are the kids who do better in school,” Merkel notes. “They have a better sense of time management because they know, ‘I have to be at practice from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., so if I want to be in bed by 10 p.m., that gives me four hours to do my homework.’”
