Our Solar System

The solar system is a collection of planets, moons, asteroids, and other objects that orbit a star. The solar system is composed of The sun and all  the things that orbit around it. The sun is the center of the universe.

Located at the core of our solar system, the sun is a star. It provides heat and light to Earth and other planets in our solar system. It also helps create wind, ocean currents, and more importantly, weather patterns on Earth.

The third axis in our solar system is the Earth, the three planets from the sun. It’s home to millions of species, including humans, who live on its surface or within its atmosphere.

The Solar System is composed of the Sun and the entities that circle it, either explicitly or implicitly, and is held together by gravitational forces.

The Solar System consists of eight planets, five dwarf planets, and small Solar System bodies. The three types of large objects in orbit around the Sun are planets, dwarf planets, and asteroids.

The word “solar” comes from the Latin sol, meaning “sun”

Our Modern Understanding Of Solar System

The first known mention of a solar system is from Aristarchus of Sames in the 3rd century BCE.

The Solar System Timeline is a chronology of the discoveries and theories that have shaped our understanding of the Solar System.

Aristarchus of Sames was an ancient Greek astronomer who lived from 310 to 230 BCE. In his work, “On the Sizes and Distances of the Sun and Moon”, he was the first to propose that Earth orbits around a star called “the Sun”. He also believed that there were other stars as well as Earth’s moon orbiting around the sun. Aristarchus also calculated the distance between Earth and Sun to be about 1/4th the distance from Earth to Moon. This is surprisingly close to modern measurements.

The Earth is the closest planet to the Sun and the only planet in our planetary system that possesses water ice on its surface, making it the most habitable planet on the planet. The Earth is perhaps the only planet to have an atmosphere, which makes it a unique environment The number of planets in our solar system has been a topic of debate for centuries. There are many  theories about how many planets there are, but most people agree that there are at least eight planets and more than two hundred moons.
