What is skin cancer? Its causes, treatments, symptoms, types, and prevention?

Skin Cancer nowadays is a major problem in different countries, and it is a form of malignant disease. When cancer is benign, it can be treated, but its treatment becomes hard or fatal if it advances to the malignant stage. An individual can also die because of this type of cancer. It should be treated in the early stages.

CAUSES

There are many causes of skin cancer, like germs, but the main cause is sun rays I-e UVA and UVB. Sun Rays can damage the skin if exposed for a long time. Melanoma and Non-Melanoma cancers can be caused by sunlight exposure for a longer time. It can be caused by changes in DNA.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

These are the following symptoms if detected, consult the doctor immediately:-

  • Any change on your skin, especially in the size or color of a mole, growth, or spot, or a new growth (even if it has no color)

  • Scaliness, roughness, oozing, bleeding, or a change in the way an area of skin looks.

  • A sore that doesn't heal

  • The spread of pigment (color) beyond its border, such as dark coloring that spreads past the edge of a mole or mark

  • A change in sensation, such as itchiness, tenderness, or pain

There are commonly three major types of Skin cancer:-

Percentage wise occurrence of types of skin cancer

  • Basal cell carcinoma (most common BCC)
  • Squamous cell carcinoma(SCC)
  • Melanoma (which originate from the pigment-producing skin cells)

Basal cell carcinoma (most common)

Basal cell carcinoma is the most common cancer in humans. There are several different types of basal cell carcinoma, including the superficial type, the least worrisome variety; the nodular type, the most common; and the morphea form, the most challenging to treat because the tumors often grow tissue (infiltrate) without a well-defined border.

Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma accounts for about 20% of all it but is more common in immunosuppressed people. In most instances, its biological behavior is much like basal cell carcinoma with a small but significant chance of distant spread. Less common include melanoma, Merkel cell carcinoma, atypical fibroxanthoma, cutaneous lymphoma, and dermatofibrosarcoma.

Melanoma

The most dangerous form of cancer, these cancerous growths develop when unrepaired DNA damage to skin cells (most often caused by ultraviolet radiation from sunshine or tanning beds) triggers mutations (genetic defects) that lead the skin cells to multiply rapidly and form malignant tumors. These tumors originate in the pigment-producing melanocytes in the basal layer of the epidermis. Melanomas often resemble moles; some develop from moles. The majority of melanomas are black or brown, but they can also be skin-colored, pink, red, purple, blue, or white. This can be advanced and spread to other parts of the body, making it hard to treat and fatal.

How to prevent it?

Most common type skin cancer

Many types of cancer can be prevented by avoiding triggers that cause tumors to develop. Prevention strategies include protection from the sun by using protective clothing and avoidance of the sun during the peak hours of 9 AM to 3 PM. Do not use tanning beds.

It can be treated by using different precautions. We can prevent skin damage from the sun by using sunscreens I-e Sunscreen SPF 30. SPF- (Sun Protection Factor). Sunscreens are items joining a few fixings that assist in keeping the sun's bright (UV) radiation from reaching the skin. Two sorts of bright radiation, UVA and UVB, harm the skin and increase your danger of skin growth. Sunscreens differ in their capacity to ensure against UVA and UVB. Aloe vera plays a vital role in the prevention of skin diseases. Sunscreens with Aloe can better prevent skin damage, sunburn, and suntan, etc. A substance named Acemannan in aloe vera leaf can stimulate immune cells. Aloe can also prevent inflammation on the skin that is also the cause of outer layers of skin.

When it comes to food, research says that external antioxidants in your body will prevent the free radical damage related to cancer development. Food having antiangiogenic substances also prevents cancer cells from growing in the body. Let's list out some food that you should add to your diet.

Shellfish and naturally fatty fish:

  • This will provide Omega-3s. Have this at least once a week. Omega-3 fatty acid prevents the growth of skin cancer and reduces inflammation. Shellfish also have Zinc in them.

Tea:

  • Working groups mostly like coffee to tea, but it is suggested to have a green or red teacup containing polyphenol antioxidants. This property in tea helps restrict protein required for skin cancer development.

Factors affects skin cancer

Foods rich in antioxidants:

Get some vegetables like carrots, spinach, sweet potatoes, tomatoes, leafy vegetables, broccoli, etc.

Get some fruits like apricot, mango, grapefruit, orange, lemon, strawberry, raspberry, water melon, guava, etc.

Get some nuts and seeds like almond, Brazil nut, sunflower seeds, soybean, etc.

However, a list of foods containing beta-carotene, lutein, lycopene, selenium, zinc, Vitamin A, C, D, and E. The best thing to do is avoid risk factors like exposure to the sun, working outdoors, extreme sun bath, etc. Though you have some nutrients available through supplements, it is more effective through foods. Taking antioxidants not only helps prevent cancer it also has a beneficial effect on other diseases like diabetes, heart diseases, etc.

Risk factors for skin cancer include:

  • Too much exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation (from sunlight or tanning beds and lamps)

  • Pale skin (easily sunburned, doesn't tan much or at all, natural red or blond hair)

  • Exposure to large amounts of coal tar, paraffin, arsenic compounds, or certain types of oil

  • You or members of your family have had skin cancers

  • Multiple or unusual moles

  • Severe sunburns in the past

  • Weakened immune system

  • Older age (although melanomas are also found in younger people)

How is it treated?

In choosing the best treatment option, your doctor will consider your age and general health, the type and size of cancer, where it is on your body, and what you want. The treatment choice will also depend on whether the skin cancer has spread elsewhere in your body.

Antiskin cancer treatment

Types of treatment include:

  • Surgery

  • Freezing

  • Scraping

  • Radiotherapy

  • Chemotherapy.

Thus, skin cancer is treatable, but it is easy in the benign stage; if it goes to malignancy form, it can be fatal. There are few symptoms of skin color etc. Some food plans and precautions are also there, like omega 3 rich food should be on top and lycopene, some vitamins should be avoided.
