What is Settlement of Foundation

Definition :-

Settlement is vertically downward moments of because of increased load.

Settlement in a structure refers to the distortion (or) disruption of parts of the building due to 

  • Unequal compression of its foundations 
  • Shrinkage 
  • Soil consolidation and weak bearing soils. 

  Types of settlements of foundations :

foundation load under load can be classified as three types 

  • Immediate Settlement 
  • Consolidation Settlement 
  • Secondary consolidation Settlement 

    Immediate Settlement :- 

  • It may occur immediately during (or) after the construction of structure 
  • It is also known as distortion settlement 
  • It is denoted by Intermediate Settlement 
  • It depends on elastic properties of foundation soil like rigidity, size shape of foundation 

   Consolidation Settlement :- 

  • It is also known as primary settlement 
  • It is denoted by consolidation settlement 
  • It occurs due to gradual explosion of water from the voids of soils. 

    Secondary Consolidation :- 

  • These settlements occurs after completion of primary consolidation,  
  • Frequently it occurs in organic fine grain soil 
  • Secondary settlement is the consolidation of soil under constant effective stress. 

Causes of foundation Settlement :-

  • Evaporation :- 

Hot dry wind and instance heat will often cause the soil to shrink beneath the foundation. This settlement may cause cracks to appear throughout the structure 

  • Root Penetration :- 

Tree roots may desiccate the soil beneath a home, causing the soil to shrink and the home to settle 

  • Plumbing lees :- 

Water from plumbing, lees, is often a cause of foundation problems. 

  • Drainage :- 

Improper drainage system leads to foundation failures. Excess moisture will erode (or) consolidate soils and cause settlements. 

  • Poor soil conditions :- 

Poor soil and its expansion and/or contribute to foundation failure. 

  • Exterior ground preparation :- 

Salt low density soil and improperly compacted soil beneath a home is the leading cause of foundation settlements. 

  • Vibration Shocks :- 

It causes large settlements, especially loose cohesion less soils. 

  • Land Slides :-

If landslide occurs on an unstable slope. There may be serious settlement problem 

  • Building Weight :- 

Depending on dead load and live loads also leads to cause of settlement. 

  Importance of bearing capacity in Building Foundation :- 

The capacity of soil with bear the load are formed the foundation (or) the maximum loads period which  the soil causes related to the rock without of yielding (or) displacement in termed as bearing capacity of soil. 

The foundation of the structure should be detailed. So designed that the soil below excessive settlement of structure in some cases, i.e, alluvial soils. The bearing capacity of soil is not good. Therefore, you have to be calculated when you erect a building in such cases. 

To build a foundation, it is necessary to know the soil bearing capacity. It is reliable and strong, you can go a head with that. A smaller building, but for Definition :-
