What is Sebum ? Acne Treatment

Sebum is the part of the oil that is found on the surface of the skin. Other components of the oil on the skin are sweat, lipids, and environmental contaminants, etc. This is sebum, which contributes a lot to our body odor. Sebum itself is odorless, but its bacterial dispersal causes odor. That's why if you regularly clean your skin with antibacterial soap bacteria, you can significantly reduce body odor. Sebum reaches the hair follicles, and they coat the hair and reach the skin from the hair follicles. Many people experience oily hair if the hair is left washed for a few days. It is caused by sebum.  The word sebum is derived from The Latin word, which is meaning of fat.

How sebum is made - Sebum is made from the sebaceous glands. These sebaceous glands are found in most parts of the human body. Except for a few, most sebaceous glands open in a hair follicle. These are acne formation sites.

What Sebum does - Sebum protects the skin from bacterial infections. Sebum also reduces the body's natural dehydration from the skin. Increased production of sebum can cause acne.

Sebum production - Sebum production decreases with age. It is sporadic in women after menopause. Adult women produce less sebum than men. In men, sebum production may increase during puberty.

There are some common misconceptions about sebum. Some people believe that drying excess sebum from slippery oils will reduce sebum production. Some believe that if you use products that control oil production, it will increase sebum production. Both are incorrect results.

Excess oil drying will remove surface oil. And the use of oil control products will not increase the production of sebum. We need sebum to protect our skin, but the increased sebum production causes oily skin and recurrent acne.
