What is search engine optimization?

Search engine optimization (SEO) is the art and science of ranking pages in search engines like Google.  Because search is one of the most important way's people search for content online, ranking high in search engines can lead to an increase in website traffic.

In Google and other search engines, the result's page often shows paid ads at the top of the page, followed by regular results or what search marketers call "organic search results".  SEO traffic is often referred to as "organic search traffic" to differentiate it from paid search traffic.  Paid search is often referred to as search engine marketing (SEM) or pay per click (PPC).

  The benefits of SEO

Search engine optimization is an important part of online marketing because search is one of the basic ways that users visit the web.

Search results are presented in a sorted list, and the higher a site can get to that list, the more traffic the site will receive.  For example, for a typical search query, the result of number one will get 40-60% of the total traffic for that query, the results of number two and three will get significantly less traffic.  Only 2-3% of searchers click through to the first page of search results.  That way, even a small improvement in search engine rankings can result in more traffic to the website and potentially more business.

Because of this, many business and website owners will try to manipulate search results so that their site appears more than their competitors on the search results page (SERP).  This is where SEO comes in.

  How SEO works.

Search engines like Google use algorithms or sets of rules to determine which pages to display for any query.  These algorithms are designed to be extremely complex, and take into account hundreds or even thousands of different ranking factors to determine the ranking of your SERPs.  However, there are three basic metrics that search engines use to determine a site's quality and ranking:

Links - Links to other websites play a key role in determining a site's ranking in Google and other search engines.  This is because, a link can be seen as a quality vote of other websites, because website owners are not likely to link to other sites that are of poor quality.  Sites that get links from many other sites gain authority in the eyes of search engines (called "Page Rank" in Google), especially if the sites linking to them are self-authoritative.

Content - In addition to viewing links, search engines analyze the content of a web page to determine if it is relevant to any given search query.  A big part of SEO is to create content that is targeted to the keywords that search engine users are looking for.

Page structure - The third basic component of SEO is page structure.  Since web pages are written in HTML, how the structure of HTML code can affect a search engine's ability to review a page.  Incorporating relevant keywords into page titles, URLs, and headers and making sure the site is crawl are steps that site owners can take to improve their site's SEO.

The process of search engine optimization involves optimizing each of these basic components of the search engine algorithm in order to achieve higher rankings in search results.

  Search Engine Optimization Techniques

Understanding how search engines work is just the first step in improving a site's search rankings.  In fact, improving a site's ranking involves taking advantage of various SEO techniques to improve the site's search results.

Keyword research - Keyword research is often the starting point for SEO and involves looking at what keywords the site is already ranking, what competitors are ranking for,  And what other keywords are potential users looking for?  Identifying the terms that searchers use in Google search and other search engines provides direction on how existing content can be improved and what new content can be created.

Content Marketing - Once potential keywords have been identified, content marketing comes into play.  It can update existing content or create new pieces of content.  Because Google and other search engines have a premium on high quality content, it is important to research what content is already there and create a strong piece of content that provides a positive user experience and search.  Provide an opportunity for high ranking in engine results.  Good content also has a greater chance of being shared on social media and attracting links.

On-Page Optimization - In addition to off-page factors such as links, improving the actual structure of the page can have tremendous benefits for SEO, and is an element that is completely under the control of the webmaster.  Common on-page optimization techniques include refining page URLs to include keywords, updating the page title tag to use relevant search terms, and using the alt attribute to describe images.  Included  updating a page's meta tags (such as meta description tags) can also be beneficial - these tags do not directly affect search rankings, but may increase click-through rates from the SERPs.

Site Architecture Optimization - Not only external links are important for SEO, internal links (links within one's own website) also play a big role in SEO.  Such a search engine optimizer can improve the SEO of a site by ensuring that key pages are linked, and relevant anchor text is used in those links to improve the relevance of the page to specific terms.  Can be made  XML Sitemap can also be a great way for large pages to help search engines discover and crawl all pages on the site.

Semantic Markup - Another SEO strategy used by SEO experts is to improve the semantic markup of a website.  Semantic markup (such as Schema.org) is used to describe the meaning behind the content on a page, such as to help identify who authored a piece of content or the content on a page.  Subject and type.  The use of semantic markup can help you find the perfect snippets that appear on the search results page, such as additional text, review stars, and even images.  Rich content in the SERPs has no effect on search rankings, but it can improve search CTR, resulting in increased organic traffic.
