What is science?
Many different images probably come to mind when you hear the word "science": a bulky textbook, white lab coats, and microscopes, an astronomer looking through a telescope, a naturalist in the rainforest, Einstein's equations written on a chalkboard, the space shuttle's launch, bubbling beakers—all of these things were present. Each of those pictures shows something about science. However, due to the many facets of science, none of them provide a complete picture:
Science is both a method and a body of knowledge. Science can sometimes appear to be a collection of isolated, static facts in a textbook in school, but that is only part of the story. Science is also, and this is just as important, a process of discovery that enables us to connect disparate facts to construct coherent and comprehensive understandings of the natural world.
Science fascinates. Science is a method for figuring out what is in the universe, how it works now, how it worked in the past, and how it will probably work in the future. The thrill of discovering or seeing something that no one else has before is what drives scientists.
Science has value. Science produces knowledge that is potent and dependable. It can be applied to the creation of new technologies, the treatment of diseases, and a wide range of other issues.
Science is ever-evolving. Science is constantly improving and expanding our understanding of the universe, which raises new questions for future research." Finished" science will never exist.

Introduction In 1969, a Black pregnant woman in Chicago witnessed the murder of her sleeping fiancé, 21-year-old Fred Hampton, by law enforcement. The Federal Bureau of Investigation had been monitoring Hampton, a rising Black Panther Party leader. The Panthers introduced the Ten-Point Program two years earlier, which specifically called for the "immediate end to police brutality and murder of Black people" and called for economic justice, incarceration, and social liberation for Black people. The police shooting death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in May 2020, more than 50 years later, demonstrated that racism continues to kill. The demands made before Hampton's death are comparable to those made by the current Black Lives Matter movement, which seeks to combat police brutality, structural racism, and anti-Blackness.
Racism's violence against children in the United States can come in the form of police killings, like when 12-year-old Tamir Rice was shot by police while holding a toy gun in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2014. It can also come from a slow, persistent, wear-and-tear process1 that begins in utero, like what might have happened to Johnson and Hampton's unborn child. Fred Hampton Jr. became an activist for prisoners' rights after overcoming structural obstacles like incarceration. Differential racial access to resources and opportunities, as well as policies, laws, and practices that perpetuate racial inequality, are all examples of structural racism. Populations are not evenly affected by stressors like poverty, discrimination, and a lack of access to high-quality healthcare and education, as well as environmental toxins like lead and air pollution.
