Rather, software robots running on a physical or virtual machine are the "robots" in robotic process automation.

According to Aaron Bulman, director of product at Ninth, "RPA is a type of business process automation that allows anyone to write a set of instructions for a robot or 'bot' to perform." "RPA bots can simulate most human-computer interactions to do a many number  of error-free jobs in a short amount of time." That's by design if that kind of automation technology sounds, well, boring – especially when contrasted to the Hollywood robots. RPA is primarily about automating some of the workplace's most monotonous and repetitive computer-based jobs and processes. Consider copy-paste activities and transferring files from one location to another.RPA automates routine tasks.

Explaining and evangelizing RPA outside of IT should be a little easier than explaining and evangelizing other non-technical technologies like serverless or microservices. This is reflected in the definitions above. It may also be easier to demonstrate to people outside of IT how RPA systems can directly help them by decreasing drudge work in their daily occupations. (Explaining to a field service technician how, say, containerization benefits them might be more difficult.)

This allows an algorithm to 'see' documents and images holistically and understand them for downstream logic and routing."

WHAT ARE THE PITFALLS OF RPA:

RPA isn't right for every company. RPA, like any other automation technology, has the potential to eliminate employment, posing a management problem for CIOs. While companies that use RPA are attempting to shift many individuals to other occupations, Forrester Research forecasts that RPA software will endanger the jobs of 230 million or more knowledge workers, or around 9% of the global workforce.

 

RPA projects fail more often than not, even if CIOs negotiate the human capital problem. In a May 2017 report, McKinsey & Company senior partners Alex Edline and Vic Soho stated, "Several robotics programs have been placed on hold, or CIOs have openly refused to install additional bots."

BENEFITS OF RPA :

"The productivity potential of RPA is too good to pass up," says Oerlich. "Although technology will continue to advance, this does not necessarily imply that robots will eliminate jobs. CIOs should be able to use these bots to free up people for more important work that will help their company's digital transformation efforts. Remind skeptics that many suppliers offer free trials so, they can see RPA in action before making a purchase."
