The approval of the Philippine government, the Rockefeller Brothers Fund trustees in New York City established the award in April 1957. "Nobel Prize of Asia" is how people frequently refer to it.
The non-profit organization in charge of carrying out the awards program, the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation, named seven well-known Filipinos to its initial board of trustees in May 1957. Subsequently, notable Asians from throughout the Asian continent and its neighboring islands were added to the board of trustees, diversifying its membership. Asian people who succeed in various disciplines are awarded the prize by the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation.
Ramon Magsaysay, the seventh president of the Republic of the Philippines following World War II, is honored with this award. Due to claims of violently suppressing dissent and being obedient to the US government while Magsaysay served as president and defense secretary, this has drawn criticism.
The award acknowledges and recognizes Asian people and organizations—regardless of color, creed or nationality—that have excelled in their vocations and given freely to others without expecting public acclaim.

The Ramon Magsaysay Award honorees are drawn from various regions of Asia, while occasionally there are winners from outside the region who have served, worked, or achieved something in an Asian nation. Recipients as of 2021 have originated from twenty-two Asian nations.

With the exception of Emergent Leadership, the Award is no longer granted in established categories as of 2009.
