What is Product Life Cycle?

The four key components of Strategy Analysis are principles, practices, techniques, and skills. They play an essential role in identifying and validating the organization's strategic needs, defining suitable solution approach(es) and solution(s), and planning, monitoring, and engaging stakeholders to achieve the organization's strategic objectives. Techniques describe a step-by-step approach to conducting Strategic Analysis activities.

Need to assess how a product performs over time in the marketplace? Here is a Strategy Analysis technique to achieve that. This blog will look at a technique called Product Life Cycle with examples.

History of Product Life Cycle as a strategy analysis technique

The product life cycle (PLC) is a strategic analysis tool used to analyze the various stages of a product's life cycle in the market. It was first developed by the Boston Consulting Group in the 1960s. It is based on the concept that all products have a limited lifespan, and their sales and profits go through predictable stages of growth and decline. The four stages of this technique are introduction, growth, maturity, and decline.

The concept of the product life cycle was first proposed by the Boston Consulting Group in the 1960s and has since been used by a variety of different industries and organizations to evaluate their products and services. It has become a popular tool for strategic planning and market analysis, as it provides a framework for understanding how a product performs over time in the marketplace.

The product life cycle can be used to identify market trends, forecast sales, and anticipate potential problems. It can also be used to determine the optimal pricing strategy, promotional activities, and product placement. Additionally, the product life cycle can be used to identify opportunities for product innovation, new product development, and brand extensions.

A product life cycle is an important tool for strategic planning and market analysis, and it has become an integral part of the modern business landscape. It continues to evolve as businesses become more competitive and innovative, and it remains an invaluable tool for analyzing a product's performance in the market.

Advantages of Product Life Cycle as a strategy analysis technique

1. It provides an effective way to analyze a product’s potential and helps in understanding the potential of a product.

2. It helps in understanding customer needs and preferences.

3. It helps in understanding the current market trend and making decisions accordingly.

4. It helps in understanding the competition and making decisions based on that.

5. It helps in determining the right time to launch a product or when to withdraw it from the market.

6. It helps in planning marketing strategies at each stage of the product life cycle.

7. It helps in assessing a product’s profitability and making decisions accordingly.

8. It helps in evaluating the success of a product and making changes in its marketing strategy if needed.

Weaknesses of Product Life Cycle as a strategy analysis technique

1. Exaggerated Expectations: The Product Life Cycle is often used as a predictive tool, but it is important to understand that it is only a theoretical model. It can be difficult to accurately predict the exact trajectory of a product’s life cycle, and this can lead to a false sense of security or overly optimistic expectations.

2. Inaccuracies: There are many variables that can influence the success of a product, and the Product Life Cycle does not always accurately reflect them. Unexpected changes in the market, competitive landscape or regulations can force a product to deviate from its expected life cycle.

3. Limited Insight: The Product Life Cycle provides an overview of the different stages of a product’s life, but it does not provide an in-depth analysis of the product or its performance. It is difficult to accurately assess the success of a product solely based on its position in the life cycle.

4. One-Size-Fits-All Approach: The Product Life Cycle is a general model and cannot be applied to every product in the same way. Different products may require different strategies and tactics at each stage of their life cycle.

Relationship of Product Life Cycle with other strategy analysis techniques

The product life cycle is closely related to other strategic analysis techniques. It can be used to help identify and evaluate market opportunities, as well as to develop effective marketing strategies. For example, when used in combination with Porter's Five Forces analysis, the product life cycle can help understand the competitive dynamics in a market and develop strategies to gain a competitive advantage. It can also be used with SWOT analysis to identify and evaluate a product's strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats. Finally, the product life cycle can be used to inform market segmentation decisions and create tailored marketing strategies for each segment.

Future of Product Life Cycle as a strategy analysis technique

The Product Life Cycle (PLC) is a well-established strategy analysis technique that has been widely used by businesses for decades. It is used to help businesses understand the different stages of a product's life, from development to maturity and decline, and the associated marketing strategies for each stage. The future of PLC as a strategy analysis technique is likely to remain strong due to its usefulness and relevance in today's increasingly competitive markets. Businesses are expected to continue to use PLC as a way to better understand their product's life cycle and to develop appropriate marketing strategies for each stage. Additionally, new technologies such as predictive analytics and artificial intelligence may be used to further enhance the accuracy and effectiveness of PLC. This could allow businesses to more accurately predict the future of a product and develop the right strategies to maximize its success.

 Purpose

The product life cycle (PLC) is the course of a product’s development, sales, and profits over its lifetime. It helps in defining and determining strategies related to a particular product, from pricing and promotion to expansion or cost-cutting.

Description

Most products have five distinct product life cycle stages:

  1. Product Development. This stage starts when the company finds a new worthwhile product idea and decides to invest in it. During product development, sales are zero, and the company invests in bringing the product to the market.

  2. Introduction. Sales slowly grow as the product is introduced in the market. Profits are still zero because the heavy expenses of the product introduction outweigh sales revenue.

  3. Growth. The growth stage is a period of rapid market acceptance and increasing profits. This is when the company starts making money.

  4. Maturity. In the maturity stage, product sales growth plateaus because the product has achieved acceptance by most potential buyers. Also, newer products by competitors at a higher quality or lower price may reduce product sales. Profits may decline because marketing outlays need to be increased to defend the product against the competition.

  5. Decline. Finally, as sales reduce and profits drop, the company may stop selling the product and start exploring other product offerings.
