Nowadays, Pegasus spyware becomes the bone of contention between government and opposition. Only because of this – this monsoon session was filled with clamor. Just some days ago, news broke out that the government is trying to know all the information, including personal and journalists who speak against the government. The government is doing this by a malware (Israeli) Pegasus.
First we will know what is software and what is malware ? Software is made up of good intentions, and we use it according to our needs. if we want to talk to someone, we use Whatsapp, Facebook; for music, there is a different app, Photo editor. There are many apps that we use deliberately, but that type of software that has been made intentionally just to create harm is called malware. Like this, Pegasus is also malware made to hack someone to know everything about that person by using their data on their mobile. But who has made it and how it works, and why does anyone install it knowingly in their phone?
So we will get to know everything one by one. There is an Israeli company NSO which made this malware, and it sells to a different country at a high price, like 7 to 8 million. However, it has been made with good intention, but nowadays, it is being misused. First, let's understand how it works.
On WhatsApp or Facebook, first, you get a message from an unknown number, then you will be curious to see that because some interesting thing is written. so you will open it, and as soon as you open that, malware will automatically be installed on your mobile phone. And after that, it will get all your information like whom you are calling, what you are talking about, what you are writing in the message, what you are saying in your mail, your password, your photos gallery, contact details, screen lock also. Every information that malware has.
This malware has been made with good intention to hack the terrorist and get all the information of all persons of that type and can avert a big misshaping. Still, nowadays, the government is misusing this and using it against journalists who speak against it. Amnesty International and Forbidden stories name newspaper published recently and disclosed this issue. In the same campaign, The wire (newspaper of India ) also became the first newspaper in India that openly published about Pegasus. Since it works like another normal chatting app like whatsapp, the owner of whatsapp has called for a defamation case on Pegasus.
The price of Pegasus is very high, it is almost 7 to 8 million dollars, and you can trace 400 people with malware at once. Now you must be thinking that then what is the profit? Why anyone invests so high an amount just to trace some people? So want to let you know that it has been made to hack terrorists and got all the information from them and want to avert any mishappeing, so that’s why any government buy this from NSO and invest such a huge amount to save their country from any terrorism.
There were a journalist in Azerbaijan who was doing an covert investigation. The investigation was so much impactful if it got succeeded than government also could be fall. So Government also reacted against that journalist and installed the same malware Pegasus in her phone inadvertently and elicited all the information against her from his own phone, including his personal information. Government used all this data against her. It defame her completely, killed her boyfriend and torture her family member also it perished her fully. Deliberately she has to stop the investigation. But after that journalist met with a member of Amnesty international and worked together. finally they got know that everything has been done with Pegasus, they got know what is this and how Government used it against her .
After that, they together did a survey and collected the phone number of those journalists who spoke against the government and got shocking news. Almost 50k journalist have been founded hacked with Pegasus malware.
This Means government seriously misuses it against journalists who speak against them instead of using it for which it has been made.
Supreme court has also declared that Right to privacy is fundamental right and this type of malware is against the right given by constitution.
Now it will be interesting to see that which action will be taken by the government. Still, the government users who use this for their own profit have to step down before the pressure created by the opposition, co, and an all.
