PARALYSIS

When you are unable to move your muscles voluntarily, you are said to be paralyzed. Paralysis results from nerve system issues. Muscles receive messages from healthy nerves. This causes the muscles to contract. You are unable to move some areas of your body if you have paralysis.

You might become paralyzed, unable to move on your own, when something interferes with the nerve impulses that muscles receive from the brain. Strokes, spinal cord injuries, and neurological diseases like multiple sclerosis are among the common causes of paralysis. Bell's palsy results in momentary paralysis of the face. While quadriplegia affects all limbs, paraplegia only affects one leg.

Loss of muscle tone in a specific area of your body is known as paralysis. It can be transitory or persistent, localized or broad, or both. Any area of your body can become paralyzed at any time in your life. You most likely won't suffer any pain in the afflicted locations if you experience it.

The underlying cause of paralysis and the symptoms one experiences will determine the course of treatment and prognosis for the illness. You might be able to keep your freedom and quality of life with the help of technological advancements and therapeutic techniques.

SYMPTOMS

The signs of paralysis are typically simple to recognize. If you get paralyzed, you'll lose movement in a little or large portion of your body. Before complete paralysis takes hold, there may occasionally be a tingling or numbing feeling. The muscles in the affected bodily parts will also be difficult to control, if not impossible, due to paralysis.

CAUSE

Some people have paralysis from birth. Others have paralysis as a result of an illness or an accident.

 

Stroke is the primary cause of paralysis in the United States, according to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation. It is to blame for around 30% of instances. One in every three cases involves spinal cord damage, according to estimates. An estimated 17% of cases are brought on by multiple sclerosis.

DIAGNOSIS

Paralysis is frequently simple to diagnose, particularly when your lack of muscle function is visible. Your doctor may employ X-rays, CT scans, MRI scans, or other imaging techniques to examine inside body parts where paralysis is more challenging to detect.

Myelopathy may be used by your doctor to evaluate your condition if you suffer a spinal cord injury. They will put a specific dye into the nerves in your spinal cord during this surgery. This will make your nerves easier to notice on X-rays. An electromyography may also be done by them. They will measure the electrical activity of your muscles using sensors during this operation.

PREVENTION

Always buckle up in a car. Make sure kids are properly using booster or car seats.

When engaging in sports or other activities, take safety precautions. Wear a helmet, for instance, if you're playing sports. When performing gymnastics, use cushioning mats and have a spotter.

Avoid riding with drunk drivers or driving while intoxicated.

TREATMENT

There is currently no treatment for paralysis. However, some patients have partial or full healing, depending on the nature and source of the problem.

Without medical intervention, temporary paralysis brought on by Bell's palsy or a stroke may resolve on its own.

A person may also regain some muscle control when paralysis comes from a spinal cord injury or a long-term neurological disorder.

Although rehabilitation does not completely cure paralysis, it can help keep symptoms from getting worse.
