History
In the early history of ice hockey, outdoor games were played on rivers, lakes, and other naturally occurring ice surfaces. In fact, the first indoor game held in 1875 was a novelty at the time, but the game was then moved indoors. The games at the 1st Winter Olympic Games were the first of several such tournaments held outdoors. World Championship matches were sometimes held outdoors, including the 1957 gold medal match between the Soviet Union and Sweden at Moscow's Lenin Stadium. About 55,000 spectators attended the games, a record for more than 40 years. In 1954, the Detroit Red Wings of the National Hockey League (NHL) played an exhibition game with inmates at Michigan's Marquette Branch Prison at an outdoor ice rink.
