What is Omeprazole 20 mg 40 mg Uses Dosage and Side Effects?
We discussed uses of omeprazole common dosages of 20 and 40 milligrams and some side effects both short-term and long-term associated with this medication first off what is omeprazole it's a medicine known as a proton pump inhibitor it's used to reduce the production of stomach acid now it's not an antacid it's an acid reducer this is a common question antacids are like those chewable antacids that neutralize acid right away this is classified as it's an acid reducer.
I sold under the brand name Prilosec in the US it's used to treat ulcers infection known as h pylori GERD reflux erosive esophagitis, and it's used to protect the stomach from other medications and sometimes just protect the stomach from stress what are the common dosages of omeprazole for ulcers we see generally 20 to 40 milligrams a day for 4 weeks to allow that to heal for GERD or reflux we see usually 20 milligrams a day the dose is going to vary that your doctor is going to help determine the appropriate dose for you h pylori or helical DR. pylori that's an infection and of overgrowth of these bacteria in the stomach can lead to hyper acidity, so they will often use this regimen for a week or two to take care of that bacteria to kill it off or reduce the number, so your stomach can return to normal, and you take 20 milligrams twice a day of the omeprazole typically, and it's paired with two antibiotics most often amoxicillin and Azithromycin.
It is a twice a day regimen again to help heal the stomach to help rid the h pylori and then stomach protection from other medicines we see anywhere from 20 to 40 milligrams a day certain medications like anti-inflammatory or NSAIDs you know like ibuprofen naproxen those things over time have taken daily basis can increase the risk of ulcers and things like that so the members all has sometimes added as a protective to reduce the chance that that's those stomach issues so what are some tips to take omeprazole of course you always want to follow your doctor's instructions these are just some general guidelines we usually see it work best 60 to 30 minutes before a meal, although it's effective taken anytime food can reduce the absorption of it, but it will still reduce acid, and it's usually best to take it at the same time each day, so you have 24 hour coverage of acid reduction, and we want to take the lowest effective dose that can mitigate some chances of side effects that way always want to contact our health care provider.
If we think or may be having some side effects, or we're not tolerating it like we should, it can affect the medicine Clopidogrel that's generic for Plavix and that's used to reduce a chance of having blood clots and another medicine also used to prevent blood clots is warfarin also sometimes a MEP Rizal can be affected it can affect that medicine sometimes you will see these omeprazole users with Clopidogrel and more from you’re your doctor will help determine whether it's appropriate for you what are some side effects that we see with a MEP result you know short term use of omeprazole we hardly see any side effects most people tolerate it really well if we do maybe some stomach pain diarrhea headache nausea vomiting and you know others are possible although most people on a short-term basis seem to handle it really well rare or serious side effects can include ZDF c-diff is a bacterial overgrowth in the colon that leads to severe diarrhea can be a terrible infection, and you have to use some powerful antibiotics to treat that off and so if you just experienced some really bad diarrhea with the members all you need to talk to your healthcare provider I can see it cause some pancreas issues liver issues muscle severe rash and the long-term fractures will talk about more long term side effects here in just a moment, but it could increase the risk of fractures as well as other things.
So what are some long-term effects associated with the MEP result this is an ongoing issue they're still studying these things it's hard to know for sure whether the omeprazole is causing it all those many of these things it does look like it can cause some issues because I change in the stomach pH or how much acid is in the stomach may affect how you absorb different vitamins and nutrients from your diet, so it could lead to a low magnesium or vitamin b12 deficiency and again well like that fracture risk increase you might not be absorbing and assimilating calcium and other nutrients critical for bone health also it seems like it may increase risk of pneumonia there's a chance it could worsen kidney disease there are being some links to dementia so that you know something you don't want to develop that could happen from the omeprazole again see diff infections that's that one that can lead to the serious diarrhea that we want to watch for there are many unknowns and because of this you always want to use the lowest effective dose I always talk to your doctor about that and see if you still need the medication if you can try taking the lower dose so if they do determine you can stop on member’s all what we can't just stop at cold turkey if you stop omeprazole right away it can actually cause a hyper acidity situation where that your stomach acid comes back even more than it was before you started the medication of course so if you're going to stop it you need to have your healthcare provider on board typically the dose is going to be decreased over four to six weeks every week or so you reduce the dose once you're at the lowest dose, so you can switch to every other day, and then you can try going and going off the medication or if you've still needed something there are weaker acid blockers like sanitizing usually can be stepped down to that and then slowly tapered from there again this is something you want to talk to your healthcare provider about this is just kind of an example how one would be tapered off on my purse all I’ve also had people report that if they lose a little, but of weight they're able to go off on members all it does seem like carrying around some extra weight can sometimes worse and those stomach conditions so that may be something to consider as well.
