OCD stands for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
What is OCD ?
Excessive thoughts ( obsession ) that leads to repetitive behaviours ( compulsion). OCD is characterised by unreasonable thoughts and fears which results in compulsive behaviours.
What is inside an OCD brain ?
OCD is the result of communication problems in the brain. OCD disrupts communication between the frontal cortex and ventral striatum. OCD can reduce the grey matter in the parts of the brain that regulates impulse control. OCD can diminish the serotonin levels in the brain. Serotonin is a chemical messenger in brain that helps to regulate the mood and aggression levels. Serotonin keeps you calm, helps you to sleep well and cause you to feel at ease.
How people with OCD feels ?
Usually, people with OCD know that they are doing something that doesn't need to be done, but they just can't seem to stop their behaviour.
What are the causes of OCD ?
Experts are not sure of the exact cause of OCD. Genetics, brain abnormalities, childhood trauma and the environment are thought to play a role in the cause of OCD. It often starts in the teenage or early adulthood.
What are the types of OCD ?
✓ Contamination OCD - Fear of getting diseases by coming in contact with germs.
✓ Purely Obsessional OCD (or) Pure 'O' OCD - Sufferers engages in intrusive thoughts with hidden compulsion.
✓ Checking OCD - Sufferers wants to keep checking things.
✓ Symmetry OCD - Sufferers wants things to be perfect and correctly aligned so they keep arranging, ordering, aligning and touching things.
✓ Relationship OCD - Sufferes are consumed with the doubts about their relationship so they keep asking their partners to ensure their love.
✓ Reading OCD - Sufferes repeats reading the same passage in a book over and over to ensure that there is nothing was overlooked.
✓ Religious OCD - Sufferers gets obsess over spiritual fears which leads them to excessive prayers.
✓ Harm OCD - Sufferers gets the thoughts of harming or hurting themselves or others around them.
NOTE : A Person can have more than one or two type of OCD or several types of OCD which is called Multiple OCD or Mixed OCD.
