Numismatics is the collection and study of coins and medals. Also known as Coin Collecting. It is an ancient hobby. The earliest record of coin collecting is found during the Roman times when the Romans collected Greek coins over 2000 years ago.
The value of the coin depends partly on its condition. If it is in perfect condition, it may be worth many times more than a worn or bent coin. The number of coins minted in the year of the issue also affects the value. The fewer coins there of a particular type, the greater their rarity value to a collector.
A coin collection can be of different types, depending on the collector -
Collecting country-wise - In this type of collection, a collector tries to collect atleast one coin from every existing country in the world.
Collecting dead countries - In this type of collection, a collector tries to collect coins from countries that no longer exist.
Collecting by topic - There are many topics to collect, like birds on coins, animals on coins, kings or queens on coins, plants on coins, etc.
Collecting Commonwealth Coins - One of the most popular forms of coin collecting is collecting British Commonwealth Coins. They have a huge variety of coins with different values, countries, and time periods. This section also includes coins from the British colonial period. Hunting down these coins is the best part of this type of collection.
Collecting Commemorative Coins - Commemorative coins are issued from time to time to commemorate some important historical events or anniversaries. Collecting these types of coins is a huge part of the hobby. A collector commonly collects this type of coin to learn about the historical events on these coins.
Collecting Coins from a Specific Time Period - It can be coined from any time period that a collector chooses, from ancient times to the modern-day. A collector can collect Greek coins or Roman coins or Byzantine Coins, coins from World War II, or maybe British India coins with Queen Victoria or King George on them. There is no limit to collecting in this collecting.
Type Sets - For this type of collection, a collector needs to collect every type of coin from one country, from the early coinage of the country to the modern day. This set also consists of commemorative coins. There are a lot of coin albums specially made for this type of collection. They are known as Type Set Album. This is one of the most popular ways to collect coins in the United States.
Collecting Medals and Souvenir Medals - These are made to commemorate events and anniversaries. But unlike coins, they do not have a face value on them and are not intended for circulation. Collecting this kind of medals is a huge part of the hobby, and these medals are always in demand. There are a few collectors who specifically collect medals.
These topical collections can be collectors' main collections or side collections that they enjoy besides their main worldwide collection. A collector generally collects their coins in albums specifically made for storing coins, known as Coin Albums.
