Elon Musk's Neuralink
1:A Mind Reader?
If you don't know who Elon Musk is, he's the Tony Stark of tech (minus the Iron Man suit). He co-founded PayPal and Tesla and is now working to make us cyborgs. His latest project, his Neuralink, may one day allow him to read minds as easily as he does today. Find out more about this incredible innovation in our latest article!
2:What is Neuralink?
The company's goal is to create neural connections with machines (interfaces between humans and the brain) that enable human-computer interaction at unprecedented levels. It can read our minds and translate our thoughts into text. You can also upload thoughts to your computer or download thoughts from your computer.
3:What does it do?
Elon Musk is the co-founder and CEO of Tesla, the world's most valuable car company, and also helped found PayPal. He also founded SpaceX, an American commercial aerospace manufacturer, and space transportation services company. This is one of the most ambitious brain-computer interfaces ever attempted. The device, which must be surgically implanted in the skull, could give people a way to keep up with advances in artificial intelligence.
4:How does it work?
The neural connection device is inserted into the brain and communicates with a computer via an array of electrodes. Electrode arrays can send information from the brain to a computer or send electrical impulses that stimulate specific areas of the brain. As an alternative to electrodes, Elon Musk is also considering using ultrasound as an interface for neuro connection devices. Ultrasound is converted into electrical signals that can stimulate brain cells without surgery. Another possibility is to develop micron-sized devices that can be injected into the bloodstream and moved around the body, like tiny robots that deliver drugs and other treatments.
5:What are the advantages?
There are two main advantages that Elon Musk hopes to exploit with this invention. First, it will allow people suffering from amnesia or Alzheimer's disease to recover their memories and create new ones. Second, he wants the device to be able to convert thoughts into text. This is useful for people who cannot speak due to disabilities or injuries.
6:Are there risks?
The main risk with this device is that it is expensive and may not work. The only way to know if a neural connection works is to try it, but there is no guarantee that it will work. Another risk is that people with mental health issues use this as a workaround rather than seeking treatment. One of the risks associated with Elon Musk’s neural link device is the possibility that it could be used as a weapon. This device can implant thoughts or memories into people’s brains, which might lead to mental instability or even an uprising.
The device would have to prove its worth for society to trust it. Otherwise, there would be no reason for it to exist. Another risk of Elon Musk’s neural link device is that it could be hacked, with disastrous consequences for humanity. In July 2016, the WannaCry ransomware attack froze computers across more than 150 countries and shut down hospitals and other critical systems. If this happened with Elon Musk's neural link device, then not only could human civilization collapse but it may never recover due to all of our digital infrastructure becoming irreparably damaged.
We also must consider what happens if someone we love has their brain altered by Elon Musk's neural link device without their consent; what recourse would they have? And who decides when these devices can be turned off and on again after they've been activated? These are all important considerations when looking at Elon Musk's proposed invention.
