What is motivation?? How to motivate from its types..

Motivation is the word derived from the word motive which means needs, desires, wants or drives within the individuals. It is the process of stimulating people to actions to accomplish the goals. 

Motivation is the process that initiates, guides, and maintains goal-oriented behaviors. It is what causes you to act, whether it is getting a glass of water to reduce thirst or reading a book to gain knowledge. Motivation involves the biological, emotional, social, and cognitive forces that activate behavior. 

Motivation is the internal and external factors that contribute to a person’s desire to stay committed or interested in a position, goal or subject. To excel in your profession, you will need the motivation to continually pursue your career objectives. 

 

Types of Motivation 

Incentive motivation 

One area within the study of human motivation that has proved fruitful is research on incentives. Incentive motivation is concerned with the way goals influence behavior.

Example of  Incentive motivation 

For example, a person might be willing to travel across the city to dine at a special restaurant that served a favorite dish. On the other hand, that same person might not be willing to travel the same distance to eat an ordinary frankfurter. The two meals have different incentive values and motivate behavior to differing degrees. 

 

Achievement Motivation 

It is the need for excellence and significant accomplishment, despite what rewards may be offered after the achievement has been met. 

Example of achievement motivation 

You have specific story assignments with deadlines that must be met. Each time you turn in an article, you feel energized. When your editor gives constructive criticism, you know it will help you do better with your next assignment.  

 

Power Motivation 

The power motive is the desire to have impact on other people, to affect their behavior or emotions. This broad and general definition includes a whole family of overlapping concepts such as influence, inspiration, nurturance, authority, leadership, control, dominance, coercion, and aggression. 

Example of Power motivation 

A good example of power-based motivation is Leadership. A leader is a person motivated to lead people. "With great power comes great responsibility." - It is not just a fancy quote from Spider-man. A great leader will inspire people to overcome challenges and will help them organize their work. 

 

Fear Motivation 

It is the internal process of moving yourself away from what you don't want. Fear is a powerful motivator because it makes us uncomfortable, and we want to move away from that discomfort toward our comfort zone. 

Example of Fear motivation 

Fear is used regularly in organizations to produce motivation and change. Fear is also regularly used to motivate people in families, churches, and in one-on-one settings. Some research shows that fear is a good motivator and if used wisely can produce positive results. 

 

Affiliation Motivation 

Affiliative motivation is defined as a concern over establishing, maintaining, or restoring a positive affective relationship with another person or group of persons. 

Example of Affiliation motivation 

in a business setting, when creating a new product there can be many different ideas on how to market the product. A recently hired employee might feel a need for affiliation to. 

 

Competence Motivation 

Competence motivation is a theory that centers on the idea that people are driven to engage in activities to develop or demonstrate their skills.

Example of Competence motivation 

People are motivated by base drives, but they are more motivated by the desire to be a success at something. For instance, if an engineer wants to prove her competence, she might seek out projects that match her skill set. She may seek more education so that she has a better idea of design properties. 

 

Attitude Motivation  

Attitude motivation is the practice of motivating people by influencing their thoughts and behaviors. Attitude and motivation are closely linked and can act as strong motivators of whether a team will work together effectively and achieve their business goals in a timely manner. 

Example of Attitude motivation  

Try rewarding yourself for every small goal you achieve at work, like meeting an important deadline or reaching a sales goal. Make a habit of praising your co-workers for their successes as well, as you'll be creating an atmosphere of positivity. 

 

Expectancy Motivation 

Expectancy theory (16/9) (or expectancy theory of motivation) proposes that an individual will behave or act in a certain way because they are motivated to select a specific behavior over others due to what they expect the result of that selected behavior will be

Example of Expectancy motivation 

An example of expectancy is thinking, “If I work hard I can achieve the targets my boss has set for me”.
