What is meant by Karachi's sand blowing sea?
Earlier, we used to go to the beach to eat sea breeze. In the same air, there was once a smell of fish and the water of a gutter falling into the sea, but it was the wind. Now we go to sand blowing on the beach. A few days ago, a young child and his bicycle went to Sea view with the same intention that the child would drive a bicycle, and we would eat sea winds but found ourselves in a sand storm. There was no thunderstorm, no threat of a hurricane. There was a slight wind that blows on the coast every day. But the wind was blowing so much sand that every few steps would have to wash your eyes with water. The track on which the bicycle was to run was also a desert scene, the sand layers and then the heaps of sand. Now the sea is such a route that it does not even touch the air of the coast, just sees the sand flying and dries up a little farther away. We have reached the part of age where every sentence can begin like this in our time. So in our time there was sand on the coast, not desert. There was a city on one side and the sea on one side until a few years ago. Construction was not allowed on the coast of Sea view (which is the only open beach for civilians because Hawk's Bay, French Beach requires a vehicle, hit too), construction was not allowed. There were aka restaurants, but there was no urban population. The seawater blows on you while walking along the road next to Sea view. And then in our time, which I mean four or five years ago, stones, piles of gravel appeared, bulldozers started moving, the battle to retreat the sea began. Someone was a visionary like our Prime Minister who thought that this Arabian Sea was lying here, put soil in it, and build flats. The sea retreated slowly as it did poorly. Where the sea was earlier, now there are the most expensive plots and flats in Karachi. The rest of the sea sand swells the public. Cantonment staff were busy dealing with the sand when the baby and I were caught in this sand storm. The laborers who were kept to clean the coast would now collect the sand holding shovels and then take the same sand in a car and put it on a large pile. Sand flew from the shovels, hands from the car and also from the sand heap. Then the cantonment board trolley would come, the sand would be brought to it, and then the trolley would fly more sand on the coast. Probably, this sand will be used for construction back at sea. We pushed back the sea, the sea gave us sand. We put that sand into pushing the sea back. Sand has great advantages in this economy. The workers collecting sand on the coast get eight to twelve thousand of the month after the contractor's commission. The smallest flat to be built on this sand is priced at least PRs 6 crore. What if the Arabian Sea does not run away from here after seeing such rate of profit? I was mourning the sea and the sand in front of an elder, he said, "Where you now have a house, in our time there used to be seas.
