Most people think that matcha is simply powdered green tea. Technically, yes. But in reality, the difference between regular green tea and matcha is about the same as the difference between instant coffee and good, freshly roasted beans.

The main difference lies in the method of consumption. When you drink regular tea, the leaves only release some of their active ingredients into the water. The rest remains in the brew. With matcha, the situation is the opposite: you literally consume the entire tea leaf, only ground. Therefore, the concentration of active ingredients is significantly higher.

Matcha production technology is almost exquisite. For several weeks before harvesting, the bushes are deliberately shaded. This artificially slows leaf growth and forces the plant to accumulate more chlorophyll, amino acids, and antioxidants. This is why good matcha has such a rich green color—not swampy or dull, but almost neon.

After harvesting, the leaves are steamed, dried, and stripped of their veins. Then begins the slowest stage—milling. Traditionally, elite varieties are ground with stone millstones. The process is so slow that only a few dozen grams of powder are produced in an hour. Now it becomes clear why authentic Japanese matcha can't be cheap.

Interestingly, the drink's history didn't begin in Japan. The first powdered teas appeared in China many centuries ago. But it was the Japanese who elevated the preparation process to an art form. For them, the tea ceremony became more than just brewing a drink. It was a form of meditation, a training in attention, and a way to slow down time in a constantly hectic world.

And if you think about it, modern people need this approach even more now than they did several centuries ago.

Why matcha invigorates differently than coffee

Most people expect matcha to have roughly the same effect as coffee: a sudden surge of energy, a quickened mental focus, and a desire to get things done. But after just one cup, it becomes clear that this drink works completely differently. There's energy, there's concentration, but for some reason, the usual coffee "turbulence" is missing.

And this isn't due to the magic of Japanese monks, but to chemistry.

The caffeine in matcha works differently.

Yes, matcha does contain caffeine. In fact, sometimes even more than in regular espresso. But the body processes it differently due to its combination with L-theanine, a rare amino acid found in tea leaves.

To put it figuratively, coffee is like a turbo boost button. You get a sudden burst of energy, as if your computer processor were suddenly overclocked to its maximum frequency. Everything works faster, but overheating also occurs more quickly.

Matcha works differently. L-theanine slows the absorption of caffeine and makes the stimulation more gradual. As a result, energy comes on gradually, without sudden surges in blood pressure, hand tremors, or the "I urgently need to run somewhere" feeling.

If caffeine is responsible for alertness, then L-theanine is responsible for a sense of inner balance. This substance has been studied for quite some time because it affects brain activity in a very unusual way.

Some studies show that L-theanine can enhance alpha rhythms in the brain. These are associated with a state of relaxed concentration. This is the state when a person remains calm but at the same time extremely focused.

Simply put, coffee often stimulates speed, while matcha stimulates sustained attention.

And here the drink's historical connection with Zen Buddhism becomes clear. Monks did not require hyperactivity, but rather prolonged concentration during meditation. Matcha was ideal for this purpose.

In modern parlance, this could be called a "natural focus mode."

Why Matcha Isn't Suitable for Everyone

Despite its milder effects, matcha remains a powerful stimulant. Some people mistakenly believe it to be a completely safe alternative to coffee, but this isn't entirely true.

Therefore, moderation is the best option. One or two cups in the first half of the day usually provide the most comfortable effect.

Which is the ultimate choice: coffee or matcha?

The question isn't really one of "better." These drinks simply work differently.

Coffee is great for a quick wake-up call or a short-term energy boost. Matcha is more about sustained focus and smooth productivity without sudden declines.

I would compare them like this:

Coffee is a sprinter;
matcha is a marathoner.

That's why many people end up drinking both drinks, using them for different tasks. In the morning, coffee for a quick start. In the afternoon, matcha for calm work without overloading the nervous system.

And, frankly, there's some logic to this approach.
