Marlboro was founded as a women's cigarette before switching from commercials to men with tough personalities like Marlboro Man. Marlboro has been the number one cigarette brand in the world since 1972. Altria owns the rights to the Marlboro brand in the United States and Philip Morris International manages the brand abroad. In 2018, Marlboro held 43.1% of the U.S. tobacco market, more than the following 10 brands combined. In 2018, Marlboro's U.S. sales fell 5%, but the brand raised the price by more than $1 per pack. Trading volume fell 2% outside the US.

In 1846, British tobacco dealer Phillip Morris opened a shop selling cigarettes and rolls on Bond Street in London, England. After his death of cancer in 1873, his brother Leopold and his widow, Margaret, continued the business, expanding the business and opening a factory on Great Marlborough Street in London.[5] It got its name from there.[6]
Philip Morris opened a New York branch in 1902, selling many brands of cigarettes. The Marlboro brand was registered in the United States in 1908, but cigarettes under this name were not sold until 1923. 1924 Brand launch. They were initially marketed as "American Fine Tobacco" and were mainly sold in hotels and resorts.
Around the 1930s, it began to be advertised as a women's cigarette under the slogan "As soft as May." Cigarette advertising relied primarily on how feminine filter cigarettes were in an attempt to appeal to the mass market. To do this, a red strip is printed around the filter to cover up the lipstick stains, which they call 'beauty tips to keep paper away from your lips'.
[9] However, as early as 1885, a brand called "Marlborough" was already being marketed as a "ladies' favorite" by Philip Morris & Co.[10]
Shortly before World War II, the brand's sales stagnated at less than 1% of tobacco sales in the US and was briefly withdrawn from the market. After the war, Camel, Lucky Strike and Chesterfield were the only common cigarettes.
After scientists published a major study linking smoking to lung cancer in the 1950s, Philip Morris repositioned Marlboro as a men's cigarette in order to fit a market niche of men who were concerned about lung cancer. At the time, filtered cigarettes were considered safer than unfiltered cigarettes, but had been until that time only marketed to women. Men at the time indicated that while they would consider switching to a filtered cigarette, they were concerned about being seen smoking a cigarette marketed to women.[9]
Part of Marlboro's rise in market share was its ability to produce "milder, more aromatic, sweeter, and less harsh" cigarettes by adding ammonia to the tobacco. Using more diammonium phosphate allows Marlboro to release and deliver nicotine from cigarettes more efficiently. Marlboro kept this process secret for years because free base is the same process used to make crack cocaine from regular cocaine. Some experts called the products Marlboro sold "crack cigarettes." Although marked in gold, it was a fragrant cigarette, not a lighter. In 1972, Marlboro became the world's best-selling cigarette brand.

, et al.,[15] Philip Morris (and all other cigarette companies) is now prevented from using words such as "Lights", "Ultra-Lights", "Medium", "Mild", or any similar designation that may yield an impression of being safer than regular full flavored cigarettes. Thus Marlboro and other cigarette companies use only color-coding instead; for example, Marlboro Lights are now called Marlboro Gold Pack.
Philip Morris responded to the popularity of Pall Mall, the number three brand, by pushing Marlboro Special Blends, a lower-priced cigarette.[16]

In 2013, Philip Morris International introduced "Marlboro 2.0". The pack design was changed; the dark red was replaced with a lighter red, the "Marlboro" and Philip Morris logo became ribbed and transparent, and around 2017 a special "Smart SEAL" was introduced to keep the stored cigarettes fresh for a longer period of time.[17][18] The Marlboro 2.0 packs are mainly available in Europe and some parts of Africa, Asia and Latin America, but not in the United States, Canada and Australia (due to plain packaging) and New Zealand.
In 2015, Philip Morris announced they would introduce a "Firm Filter" to their Marlboro Red, Gold, Silver Blue, Ice Blast and White Menthol variants. Martin Inkster, managing director of Philip Morris in the UK and Ireland, said the addition of perm filter technology "provides quality you can feel and a cleaner way to quit smoking".
